Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
Hi I have the same problem and my TV is brand new and it says it supports DD+ it is a KDL46NX720 from Sony. So when I plug my Roku to it the TV detects it is Dolby but that's it no sound... Is the Roku really sending the DD+? is there any way to test/prove it?

Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
Correct, his receiver is pretty old (2006) and only supports HDMI 1.2a. DD+ requires HDMI 1.3 or newer to pass DD+. The other option is to have the player decode or convert the DD+ signal to something the receiver can use. However, since the Roku only passes along the DD+ signal, it has no ability to internally decode the signal either, this isn't an option.Originally posted by DanielH View PostIt doesn't look like your receiver decodes Dolby Digital plus. Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
Please note that Netflix still has a lot of movies in DD, not DD+. Most of ours are DD+.Originally posted by DoctorQ9 View PostI find this to be an unsatisfactory response from Roku. Why is it that I have no sound problems with Netflix via Roku, yet I can only watch VUDU movies in stereo?
If your HDMI receiver (or TV, if you connected your Roku directly to the TV) only supports DD it would explain your experience.

Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
Are your Netflix movies in DD 5.1 or stereo? From what I have heard this setting in Roku was actually added originally for Netflix since they are moving to DD+ for their surround as well. They may have some existing ones still in DD 5.1 (which older receivers will support), who knows.Originally posted by DoctorQ9 View PostI find this to be an unsatisfactory response from Roku. Here's another Roku customer complaining Netflix surround doesn't work but Amazon does. It's exactly the same issue.

I find this to be an unsatisfactory response from Roku. Why is it that I have no sound problems with Netflix via Roku, yet I can only watch VUDU movies in stereo?Originally posted by Jake View PostActually, DD+ has been around for 6+ years (Vudu has been using it since 2006, and Netflix since 2010) and by now pretty much any receiver >= $200 supports DD+. I saw a pretty nice Sony 700W 7.1 receiver with 4 HDMI 1.4 inputs and DD/DD+/TrueHD/DTS/DTS-HD/etc decoding on sale for $150 on Amazon...
Anyway, Roku is the first device with VUDU support that doesn't decode DD+ internally (actually, it doesn't decode DD internally either, it's still up to the receiver). That's why we made a stereo track available as well (try turning on Dolby Pro Logic decoding on your receiver as I believe that track is matrix surround encoded).

Thanks for the info Jake. I already know that Santa (ahem) is getting me a Rocku 2 SX for Christmas. I will FINALLY be able to enjoy Vudu on the flatscreen in my office.

BTW $100+ for a roku box isn't that cheap in this economy even though its a 1 time cost.

Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
Sorry, but "top of the line" player? Roku doesn't support Dolby Digital for cost savings (it's a licensing issue, not hardware), which is why it's the cheapest streaming player available.Originally posted by DoctorQ9 View PostShame on both VUDU and ROKU to establish a channel that their "top of the line" player cannot adequately handle. Neither company advises you of this when you install the channel or establish an account. They simply let you struggle to find the answer.
Until the "engineers" find a solution I will be patronizing Netflix, Amazon, and others.
Netflix, Amazon, etc are in the same situation. If you want 5.1 surround sound from Roku you will need a receiver/TV/etc that can decode the surround, because Roku does not decode Dolby Digital.

Re: Roku 2 XS No Audio for purchased movies
The basic problem is the Roku doesn't support decoding DD+, but if you select "5.1" in the settings it will pass it through to the output (leaving it up to the receiver to decode). If your receiver doesn't decode DD+, you have to change the output to "stereo".Originally posted by sgrayban View PostThey want us to down grade our audio because they have dumb audio. Stupid 180 degrees.
No one else does this including amazon hulu and netflix. If I had know this I would have never bothered with vudu caused it has cursed audio requirements.
I'll be informing the beta team about this so they can deal with vudu and support 5.1
Netflix has this same issue on Roku with the movies they have in DD+, you just don't see it often because they don't have that many DD+ movies yet. And Hulu doesn't even do 5.1 as far as I can tell.
If you are on the Roku beta maybe you could convince them to pay for the DD+ decoder license
(all modern HW supports it, including the original VUDU box from 2006!)
