I was misinformed. Please see Jake's post below

Is there any news on Sony increasing this ridiculous restriction yet? I love using VUDU but I've had nothing but buffering issues since moving to a PS4. The ability not to be able to download is making me regret selling my PS3 already. Its also making me cut right back on new Vudu purchases till it is sorted.

If not is there no way you can try and maximise the available buffer allowed. I notice that the Vudu ps4 app only uses 110mb, whilst both Amazon Instant and Netflix take up 1100mb of space. Presumably they are allocating as much space as they can for the buffer and caching as they can.

BTW, my PS3 is in a box in a state of disassembly, so I am out of it on that platform. Do you know if VUDU downloads are still possible on the PS3? For rentals and buys?

Will VUDU on the PS4 allow you to download rentals for later playback at your convenience? Not talking about downloads for buys, but downloads for rentals.

This functionality was available (at one time at least, if not in the long run) on the PS3. And I think the PS3 was the only set-top box to ever be given that ability.
Currently, the download feature is not available on the ps4.

I would investigate this. It was my assumption as well upon initial setup of PS4; however, I discovered that Netflix and Sony's Video Unlimited service (along with BD/DVD playback, which may or may not qualify as an app ) both switch the LPCM stream to 5.1. So it is possible. Unfortunately, the Netflix app also currently downmixes everything to the L/R channels prior to embedding in the 5.1 stream.

I always prefer seeing a raw Dolby stream to an LPCM decode, because I can monitor DialNorm offset and use DRC as needed. As long as it doesn't require making a PS4 system settings change to/from bitstream specifically for the VUDU app, direct access to the bitstream would be a welcome addition.

Thank you. As you say, it has been my experience that all XBO apps adhere strictly to the settings of the XBO console (as was the case with 360 except for DVD playback).

This makes more sense for XBO due to the complexities of coding operations such as Snap and OneGuide with different channels and sample rates. It is easier to leave one 48 kHz pipe wide open all the time and mix to it.

    Thanks again for your time.

Currently, the PS4 app does not switch the PCM stream to 5.1 and 2.0 depending on content. It is locked to 7.1 all the time. Is that something you might address in a future update?

I would be curious to know the same information for the Xbox One app, as it is also locked to 7.1 (if '7.1 uncompressed' is selected in XBO settings).

    8-bit RGB 4:4:4 @ 60 Hz for compatible displays

So, as long as the peaks are not so loud you need to turn on dynamic range compression (aka. "night mode") you should not notice any difference with 7.1 LPCM Otherwise, it should be available in a future release when you select "bitstream" in the system settings...

The PS3 treated apps like games IIRC and everything is RGB, another issue for me.
PS4 does not currently support downloads - the limit to app download data is too low to support it - hopefully that will change...

The video output colorspace is still determined by the PS4 system settings, so it's not possible for apps to change. Though YCbCr 444 won't really make most PS4 video apps look better (possibly worse?) since the content is all YCbCr 420 and the UI RGB, and probably gets composited (i.e. in 3D hardware, texture mapped by a GPU) in RGB space. Outputting YUV again would just be yet another color conversion. (Honestly, no idea if the PS3/PS4 BD player composites the UI in YUV space so no conversion happens - but it's very possible it doesn't...) Anyway, if your display device handles RGB "correctly" there's nothing wrong with using it (the input gets converted to RGB internally anyway since that's what the pixels use).

As far as audio output (mentioned by Adam_ME) - there were some issues with audio decoding we are trying to work out (better to be out day 1 than wait for firmware updates - notably it's not true bit streaming yet, but it should be supported in an update.
