Re: What is vudu doing on my network?
Remember, while people like us here on the forums would like to be able to set the "aggressiveness" of the updates with a finer granularity, VUDU also has to make this user-friendly for those who don't know or care about network usage and just want to plug-and-play, so the options can't be too complicated.

Re: What is vudu doing on my network?
As stated elsewhere, not really. The box is designed to have minimal impact on your home network. It's hard to please everyone. You want to use your full download pipe right away to get the full database. Others don't want their network impacted.
I can't say much about this, but I think there are some improvements being looked at in this area that will help you get content faster. I can't promise anything or say more than this, but let's just say, Vudu understands you want your content as quickly as possible!

Re: What is vudu doing on my network?
I wish there was a feature for a new box to put it in update me now mode no matter what. I cant believe its going to take me 3 - 4 days before I have everything I need to watch all movies and TV shows. Plus another 3 - 4 hours for Bourne Supremacy to download.
I understand all the background trickle stuff for standard daily updates but there has got to be a better way for new boxes to get up and running quicker. I'm an instant gratification guy, thats why I bought the Vudu local and not direct from Vudu.

some people actually would prefer if we used more bandwidth as they are sometimes a little impatient when we release new software or databases

There is no such ability, as the service relies on it to deliver new content (movies, trailers, database updates, software, etc) to you, and helps provide instant access to every customer (including you of course).
It is designed to be non-intrusive traffic (some people actually would prefer if we used more bandwidth as they are sometimes a little impatient when we release new software or databases).
New boxes (i.e. that customers just plugged in) have missed a lot of content while they were sitting on shelves at the store (or in the warehouse), so new customers are going to see a lot of low-bandwidth traffic for long periods of time (how long depends on how long the box has been disconnected from the network), until the box catches up and the chatter then slows down.
Of course, VUDU often delivers content in preparation for new features (think about the recent TV feature), so heavy traffic usually indicates that new things are coming!
Nevertheless, if for any reason the box is taking too much of your bandwidth, there is a setting to tell it to reduce its usage (it'll basically cut it down in half), but unfortunately this has side effects such as not getting the latest stuff quickly, and not being able to watch movies instantly.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
-- Greg

And no you can't shut it off. You can only slow it down like Ron said. The whole Vudu architecture works so well because of the boxes all sharing content with one another.
Are you on a pay per kilobyte internet service or something? There's nothing wrong with a device using the network. You shouldn't be having any of your other services or ability to do anything affected. Just because lights flash doesn't mean your network is going crazy. Vudu has done a pretty good job of making sure the box doesn't thrash your network.

If you go to advanced network settings and change from letting VUDU manage the bandwidth to limit bandwith the VUDU will limit the outbouond usage. But the disadvantage is that you will no longer be able to do instant viewing of movies.

Originally posted by NA9D View PostWell, the Vudu box is hooked to your network and is always busy for the most part. First of all, it's in the process of downloading software and database updates. Second, it's working to serve shows in the P2P network.
Just because your LED's are flashing doesn't mean it's using a ton of bandwidth.
The router uses about 100 kbps uplink traffic with a maximum of around 200 kbps. Downloads happen around 300 kbps or so except for streaming.
It's doing what it is supposed to do!
