    One other thing to consider is that on the Vudu there is a lot of interesting content that you might not find other places that you want to buy. There's an interesting documentary about the NYCFD on 9/11 called "Brothers on Holy Ground." It's well done but I don't think it's ever made it to you local movie store. There are also your concert videos, etc. that you might see on Vudu but not elsewhere.

    So, the purchase option can be something that you do want, particularly if you "want it now" or can't find it anywhere else. But as for mainstream content, I'd agree, there's not a huge amount of value until portability of content is addressed.

    I've been thinking about this. There are 2 different reasons to purchase movies. One is to save money instead of repeatedly renting the same movie. The other is to build a movie collection. I think that Vudu is perfect for the first scenario but makes less sense for the collection one. My guess is that most people will rent most of the time and some will occasionally purchase. It makes sense to purchase a movies that you know you are going to watch over and over (kids movies have been used as an example). However, using Vudu to create a collection of hundereds of movies makes little to no sense.

    Overall I think that justifies keeping the capability in Vudu. If they took it out people would complain that they had to keep paying to watch the same movie when they could just go buy the DVD.

    I agree that targeting the rental community is the way to go. Buying just isnt a good option for the most part on the Vudu. You can usually find the DVD for half the price somewhere else and then be able to watch it anywhere. I will only be using the box for renting unless the purchase price is very low and I would watch the movie again the future.

    As far as cutting costs on the box, Im pretty sure that the cost right now is where it is to cover the cost of the parts as well as recovering design costs, paying employees, and making a little profit. I doubt the box will get cheaper anytime soon unless they start selling a lot and recover those initial costs.

    250GB hard drives purchased in bulk/wholesale should cost under $60. You've got to have something in there, and you aren't going to save much getting anything much smaller.

    I know the poll says otherwise but I think most people will only rent on vudu.. And I would push for more of a rent only without a buy option strategy.     Same here. Most movies I will never watch again, or if I do, itll be years from now. By then, whats another $4?

    Without a delete and reload capability, I would still rent in that case. I don't want to fill up my disk with stuff. If you can store about 50 SD movies, as the marketing stuff says, you would only be able to store about 25 HD movies. I really think the rental market is the sweet spot for Vudu.

    It is concievable that the studios are conducting experiments with price points and they may fluctuate (rent and purchase) over time to see what is the best revenue model. Unfortunately there's no guarantee that the best revenue model will be the one we would prefer (i.e. all movies have competitive rental and purchase options). It might be interesting to pick a few bell weather titles and track them over the next year to see what happens with pricing.

    Well, there are still a lot of "older" movies like Real Genius that cost $9.99 to buy and aren't rentable. I won't pay $10 to buy that, but I would pay $2.00 to rent it perhaps. Same goes for some of the old Star Trek movies.

    The older movies with the much lower purchase prices are $0.99 to rent..

    Not sure. I have a feeling they will be a dollar or two more. Purchase price is higher ($24.99 vs. $19.99) but comparable with purchase in the store.

    I'm not to worried if I have to pay 5 or 6 bucks to rent the movie in HD. It's worth it to get the better picture quality. It certainly cheaper than one ticket at the theater...

I know if it was $3.99 to rent and $4.99 go purchase, I'd go ahead and purchase it. How about $2.99, $1.99, or $.99? Where is your cutoff point philosophically speaking?
