    The Black Hole

    This turned out to be pretty funny. It's from 1979 and the special effects look like they are from 10 years earlier than that. It's actually kind of the same story as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea except for the rogue captain is parked outside of a black hole instead of under the oceans. Some of the scenes were so ridiculous from a sci-fi and/or special effects perspective that my son and I laughed out loud. It was kind of fun but I would give it 1 star instead of the 3 it got.

    Actually the special effects were good for that time period. I remember seeing it in the theater when it was first released. We all thought the effects were good, but the story wasn't very good.

      Wasn't Star Wars 2 years earlier? R2D2 looked way more like a robot and less like a trash can than the similar droid in The Black Hole.

        Star Wars Episoide IV: A New Hope was a 1977 release.

          ANd after the original Star Wars there were many knock off sci fi movies. The Black hole was actually one of the better ones made special effects wise.

          The Black hole was nominated for two Acadamy awards. One for Best Special Effects and one for Best Cinematography. It was nominated because those effects were actually very good for that year. It was released in December 1979 according to boxofficemojo.com and imdb.com.

          I think Disney had high hopes for that movie. I don't remember it doing all that well.(I see it made about 35 million dollars which sounds decent for 1979/1980 but not a blockbuster)

              The OP must have been born in the 80's.

              Saying the Black Hole had bad effects is like complaining about the 3D in Tron. You have to take into consideration the era in which it was made. Of course it's not going to hold up against what you're used to seeing, but for the time it was pretty amazing work. As aaronwt pointed out, it was nominated for 2 Academy Awards.

              I think if you go back and watch the original cut of Star Wars, you'll see some pretty cheesy looking effects as well - that doesn't mean it wasn't groundbreaking.

                Actually I was born in the early 60's. I was comparing it to Star Wars at the time. I was mostly referring to the little droid and the exterior shots when they were travelling through space, into the blak hole, etc. I guess certain aspects (the big ship) were pretty good for the time but I have seen Star Wars recently and this stuck out as not looking nearly as good from a special effects perspective. Even my 9 year old son who has seen Star Wars was laughing at some of it.

                  If you watch star wars now the special effects look pretty bad.(of course they looked excellent back in 1977)Even things from 10 years ago don't look anywhere near as good as things can now.

                    See the thing is I have seen it recently so I have a pretty fresh comparison. While Star Wars isn't near what we have today. It doesn't make me laugh when I watch it today.

                          I forgot about that. The version on HBO has the new special effects and that changed scene in the Cantina where Guido shoots first and misses

                              Cyber-Bob, brought a little "Dusty Cowboy" to his character. Saw in theaters, will never forget how "wowee'd" i was. think I was 6-7ish
