    Vudu and Google Play

I was wondering if Vudu and Google Play would ever have linking capabilities? I found Disney Anywhere links to Google Play and Vudu (Only Disney movies on Vudu). UV does not link to Google Play or Disney.

Also, UV connects to many services but will only show movies on that service which have those movies available. Doesn't that make UV almost pointless? I always felt safe knowing my digital content was backed up ,so to speak, and that I could always access these movies regardless of the service I was using. But after some trial and error, I found it's more limited. I'm not seeing the UV service really taking off.

I just asked a similar question in another thread. UV as purchased from Vudu works fine, but I am wondering about the long term health of UVVU.

Vudu is a commercial implementation of the goals of Ultraviolet.
As long as they don't go under and our digital lockers evaporate then I am happy.

Although the leg work was exciting for Ultraviolet that the big production companies were talking to solve this need it really needed to get into implementation and the feature-feedback loop to really make the customers happy.

Flixter was the first to redeem UV codes but did not have the backend to actually play the movies reliably.
Plus they were too focused on ticket sales versus digital streaming.

Vudu has stolen/imitated the Netflix model of webservices with a web front end and apps on every platform.
The fact that I can watch vudu stuff on my smart TV is progress.

The further fact that Disney caused a cross pollination between the Ultraviolet and Google Play services is a bonus.
I really wish HBO had gone in this direction as well.

You mean a cross pollination between Vudu and Google Play in terms of Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Lucasfilm. Vudu is first a foremost a video retailer and it sells movies that aren't UV or DMA compatible. It existed before UV, and it would likely survive if UV were to fold.

I see UV as just a service to make customers feel safe enough to purchase movies digitally, but was not thought out past that point. So, if digital sales don't become the norm then UV will eventually go away. With all the issues I have with Vudu Apps and streaming my library, I'm rethinking what I buy and how much.

My xbox has an update, then the Vudu app no longer will stream correctly. My Android phone gets a big update and then the Vudu App stops working.

I was all on board the digital movie train until I kept running into the same issues since I started using the service years ago.

I have never had a problem with the Vudu app on any of my Rokus or BR players and I have been using it for 3 years now also works on my iPad after every update.

I don't see Vudu and Google Play collaborating to link to one another as both are competitors. In terms of Vudu they also support the UV service which Google Play does not. Why Google or Amazon don't support UV is anyone's guess. However, Disney can be blamed for the fragmentation of the digital market. They're the one that has refused to support UV and instead created their own proprietary service.

This is how I feel, along with the numerous encode problems that never get fixed. I've gone back to just buying discs.

I believe it is generally accepted that in-home video from MPAA will transition in a similar fashion to how music from RIAA transitioned. There are very few C.D.'s sold anymore compared to MP3s. Ponyo music is pushing for a higher codec of music playback, but as of yet has had little traction.

The additional features a digital medium offer obliterates anything a plastic disc can offer me. I have long since reclaimed my book shelf and store my optical discs in cardboard boxes in the garage. Now, I keep books on my book shelf and have the entirety of my in-home collection at the beckon call of a simple button push on the remote.

It is like heaven, only better cause I do not need to die to go there.

                      Re: Vudu and Google Play

I to am moving everything I can over to VUDU to clear space. I have a few things stuck on Cinemanow, but that is an issue that could be worked out in the future. The problem is that there is still to many movies/tv showsnot sharing the same format. The way non-uv movies are at the moment it is the same as if you had to buy a walmart blu-ray to play movies only purchased at walmart and a target one to play those, and so on.

The marrying of DMA to Vudu and Google are great, but only a small step. Essentially the movies and television studios need to come together and choose one digital format, similar to choosing between VHS and Beta or Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. This will never truly take off until they do that. There needs to be one locker that links to your account at every store and every movie or tv show you purchase goes into that locker. You then have the ability to choose which player you choose to watch them on. Itunes, Google, Amazon, Vudu, Cinemanow, MGO and any other services should serve as nothing more than it's own store you can purchase from for your collection similar to how you can purchase a dvd from Walmart, Target, Bestbuy, Amazon, etc and watch it in one place.

Sorry for the ramble and hope that what i said make sense.

It's not the studios that need to choose a format. They have already chosen. It's the retailers, such as Google and Amazon that need to support the format. The studio's could do more to persuade the retailers to implement the standard they have chosen, such as refuse to let them sell new movies. If I was them, that's just what I would do.

Do you have a stake in either Vudu and/or Ultraviolet/DECE? I've noticed that you always jump in to declare how awesome digital is whenever people point out issues they run into with digital content, not just here but at other forums. Someone else pointed out the same thing.

Why would someone need to have a stake in a company or organization to be a fanboy? And I only use that term because I do agree that Walter is extremely enthusiastic about Vudu and UV, even though his posts are very well-informed, informative, and realistic.

Actually, I should count myself as a Vudu/UV fanboy too. I've got my MIL and three of my best friends sharing movies with me, none of whom had used Vudu before I got them to try it. I recommend one or both fairly often. I am probably slightly more critical of Vudu than Walter, but I agree with him much more often than not.

Anyway, maybe we should end this discussion if it's becoming about specific members rather than about Vudu itself.

to answer directly what is obviously a rhetorical question, "no".

It just surprises me when I cross paths with people who plan to invest in more plastic discs when it is obvious the trend is away from that medium. CD have their place in the music industry, but dwindling.
