Maybe it's because Vudu has a ridiculous number of movies/shows with issues (incorrect aspect ratios, etc) and they do nothing to fix it. Sure they claim they are "requesting a new encode", but that's become their standard joke answer. It never happens. I purchased a tv series and found that one of the episodes has audio horribly out of sync. They acknowledged the issue almost a year later after I brought it to their attention. I got the standard "we'll request a new encode" response and have not seen or heard anything about it since, despite me continually asking. I've noticed sometimes they'll delete my posts when I bring it up.

How about that horrible Xbox One app that tons of people have been complaining about? Nothing from Vudu indicates that's going to change.

These are issues you don't often hear about discs, if ever. Where's the customer service?

      Re: Vudu and Google Play

Amazon and Microsoft's partnership with Disney Movies Anywhere is encouraging to me since it means that a great number of titles in my library are even more secure. If any of the big three (Amazon, Itunes, or Google) adopt UV, then that will be the tipping point.

There are many ways in which Vudu can improve yet it's still head and shoulders above the competition among UV services when it comes to ease of use and device compatibility. The problem is that the big three are not interested in giving more choice to the consumer. They want to control the market share. I love Vudu's streaming service above any other, but sometimes I wonder if one or all of the big three would be more open to adopting UV if they didn't view Vudu as a serious competitor. My feeling is that UV could survive without Vudu if one or all of the big three would adopt UV.

As far as Vudu's streaming quality is concerned, it's true that the encodes for some of the movies are not perfect, but having the rights to digital content will ensure that one can at least theoretically receive upgrades to their collection even when 4K and UHD become more mainstream. If it works the way d2d does currently, it should at least give us the option to upgrade the format for a small fee rather than purchase the movies all over again.

However, a lot of this is speculation. I'm still optimistic about the future of UV and hope we will see implementation of these sometime in the near future. I also hope that Vudu remains in the picture.

        Re: Vudu and Google Play

I just bought Avengers: Age of Ultron on Google Play since I had a free credit from my Nvidia Shield TV purchase and within 2 min I saw it in my Vudu and Disney Movies Anywhere accounts along with an email from Disney confirming as much as well as the DMA points earned.

It's not UV but NICE !

I'm totally clueless as to why you think they'd allow an upgrade from SD or HDX to 4K/UHD for a small fee. Does Vudu let you upgrade SD to HDX for a small fee? No....

I admit it's just speculation on my part. However, just think of the amount of times films have been re released on DVD or even blu ray. At least Vudu promises to find the best encode available for a given format. I certainly hope that Vudu or other UV retailers present more upgrade options in the future (similar to d2d), but it's no guarantee. In any case, your less likely to double dip if you have the digital rights to a movie, and in the best case scenario, many streaming sites to choose from.

For the vast majority of films I've seen, I've been more than satisfied with the HD presentation on Vudu. I still prefer blu ray for certain films.

LOL Have you read the forums? There are numerous problems with many of the encodes and Vudu doesn't seem to do anything about it other than claim they are requesting a new encode, which Vudu never gets.

...and yet, optical disc is a dying medium & OTT iVoD is blossoming. Go figure.

Errr...no, it's not. Knock it off. And what did that have to do with my comment regarding Vudu finding the best encodes? How much does Vudu or DECE pay you?

No need to be confrontational. I can't see why streaming and physical media can't coexist. Some people feel like they have to choose sides while others like me will choose one or the other on a case by case basis. Whether Vudu succeeds or not matters very little in the grand scheme of things as there will always be digital retailers like Itunes and Amazon who will continue to cater to customers who consume media in different ways.

There is already a large enough market share to sustain both digital downloads and physical media. The growing popularity of UHD TV's means that there will always be core customers who value quality presentation over convenience, while the proliferation of streaming devices and smart features on TV's means that accessing digital content over a large array of devices is even easier than before, therefore attracting more digital customers. Digital distribution also means that customers can acquire more content, such as films that would otherwise not be available in any physical media format.

Neither option offers any guarantees for future proofing your movie collection, as digital encoding is still improving to match the current technology. At least there is now a precedent with D2D. Plus, it should be mentioned that all of the major online retailers (Amazon, Itunes, Google) offer a system where customers can upgrade their music, so it's not impossible that online streaming will evolve in a similar way.

Well stated. A cocktail mix is inevitably forecasted for the foreseeable future, but the trend is what I hang my hat on. In the current environment, there is a large uptick in folks moving to OTT digital streaming away from banner methods of delivery. That bodes very well for vendors like Vudu, IMHO.

physical media space in the major retailers is on the decline too. walmart, target, and best buy have all been shrinking their bluray/dvd sections over the past two years. not seeing this downward trend of physical media changing either. while some studios are moving away from physical releases on series too.

digital takes almost zero space to deliver. there is no real cost to make multiple copies for resale. while the infrastructure required to move digital media around is almost nothing too. while physical media requires - even with its declining market share. there will always be a place for physical media, but its going to be a smaller market for it in the future. digital media should, unless the companies behind it screw up the model royally, be the future of movie and tv distribution.

                            Re: Vudu and Google Play

Meh, Don't wait to get you're physical media; it will be hard to find sooner than you think. Big business wants to move to digital because physical sales are down the hole. More people shop online now and faster is better.

I didn't read any trendy articles, I just worked in the industry for a long time for some of the big name companies. Don't believe all the crap you read online, regardless of how well spoken and legit. Someone can sound well informed but not know dick about anything.

Reality about trends are they are just guesses to what the future will bring. If you use common sense and see MovieStop stores closing, and movie areas shrinking in store, then it's safe to assume these are not coming back and physical media is slowly being phased out or at least shrunk to just new releases. Once a movie is no longer manufactured you are stuck with finding it online used. Put it this way; a 5 dollar movie out of print will sell for over 30 to 60 dollars online usually.

There is a difference between not wanting to change with the times verse not wanting to be forced into a media format which has so many issues, to which it's hit or miss if you can watch the film due to playback issues or encoding problems.
