    HDX audio SEVERELY compressed

I checked out 3 different HDX movies. I was pleasantly surprised by the video quality but I'm pretty annoyed by what I heard: SEVERE compression.
You tout the audio as having dolby digital plus but it's far from it.

I downloaded the following movies in HDX:
Live Free or Die Hard (Unrated)
    Grosse Pointe Blank
    Masters of the Universe

Of the 3, MOTU was the only one that wasn't compressed to hell. I made a few uncompressed audio recordings and you can see how compressed it is. I will post here, if you like.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

It's rare to not find compression on audio and video. It takes up too much space to not be compressed. DD, DD+, Dolby True HD, DTS, DTS-HD MA, etc are all compressed formats.

      I'm aware of that.

      Again, it's SEVERELY compressed.

I compared GPB and LFODH to their DVD counterparts. Both had 448kbps soundtracks. This is much worse than that. I'll post pics.

HDX is supposed to be Dolby Digital + which is supposed to be 640kbps and above, no?

Regardless, they both sounded like mp3's.

HDX is DD and DD+. All HDX content is not in DD+.

Plus DD and DD+ can be at much lower bitrates, and DD+ can be at higher at least from other sources. From other sources I've heard 1.0, 1.1. 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, and 5.1. All those can have very low bitrates and very high.

Then what's the point of pointing out that HDX has a greater audio capacity? I mean, that's like saying HDX is "capable" of 1080p but the source might actually be SD 480p.

DD+ is supposed to be a more efficient compression algorithm than DD.

Clearly not. I just compared the audio from those films against a 256kbps mp3. It was worse than that.

Then you should contact VUDU for a credit. Personally I've not had issues like that. I have run into some issues with the encodes but only video issues, I don't think I've run into any audio issues like that over the last three and a half years. They have always been good about giving credit for a title that was messed up. And also about rechecking it when a problem is reported to possibly re-encode the title.

Of course they also don't have control over the master that is given them. If the problem is with the master then there isn't much they can do to fix it.
I know there have been a few bad Blu-ray Discs put out over the last 5 years with terrible audio and/or video.

Here's a visual analysis of my problems with their audio quality.

This is from the most recent HDX movie that I rented, where I could hear severe compression artifacts. There's nothing above 14000:

                  By comparison, here's a 192kbps MP3.

That one hovers between 14000 and 16000. Granted, they're two different codecs but they are still similarly compressed and have horrible sound quality.

Vudu SERIOUSLY needs to step up their audio game or stop trying to promote their aural qualities. They're clearly compromising to deliver better visuals.

Wasn't that on the original BX100 box that converts everything to Dolby Digital?

Try running it again after getting the bitstreaming LG BD player and see what it looks like. I'm curious how much of a difference there will be.
