    DD+ And Vudu

OK, I found the discussion of DD+ on the Vudu. Unfortunately, I can't link to it. I can share a synopsis of the DD+ discussion here.

Vudu encodes the audio tracks for all movies in DD+. It gives better quality at lower bit rates than DD. When the box streams, DD+ is transcoded to DD so that it can be output. Dolby is defining this transcoding process and designed DD+ such that they can do the transcoding with minimal quality loss (at least for 5.1 DD+ material with lower bitrates).

    - Summary of a statement by Volker

So why are some movies in stereo and not DD? And if the box receives a DD+ stream why is the resulting output limited to DD5.1? Is this a hardware limitation?

I don't think you can output a DD+ stream over anything other than HDMI due to licensing restrictions and the lack of any receivers that will accept such a signal. As a result you are limited to

    1) Outputting a DD+ bitstream but this requires HDMI 1.3
2)Outputting multi-channel PCM over HDMI, which the Broadcom chip can't do per Hagen's post
    3) Transcoding to DD and outputting over HDMI or SPDIF, which is currently being done.

It may seem pointless to be using DD+ if you can't actually get improved audio quality but in the case of the VUDU it appears that its purpose is to reduce the total bandwidth and file size.
I think that pretty much explains what DD+ is used for on Vudu.

Well there you go. That's the exactly the kind of detail I'm looking for!!!

    Now was that so hard??

    Thanks!!!

(I'm so happy now, I'm not even going to ask why you can't link to it )

Actually, I thought that this discussion had taken place in the public forum. It wasn't. And no, I don't have the power to give you access to where it came from so don't ask!!
