The population of the universe is zero. How do I know this?

Well, the universe is basically infinite in size. Therefore it follows that there must be an infinite number of planets. But we all know that not every world is inhabited therefore there's a finite number of habitable worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is effectively zero. So the population of the universe then is zero..

    We don't exist...
Actually, you'd have to independently prove that the number of inhabited planets was finite, since any fraction of infinity is still infinity. So even if (1.0x10^-99999)% of all planets are inhabited, (1.0x10^-99999)% of infinity is infinity. (Cantor did find that there are different ways of defining infinity, but even Aleph-zero is still infinite.)

This sounds like a Gardener type of theory, but I haven't read Gardener in many years.

You've just blown my mind!!! Who needs an acid tab with that??

Don't forget that with integral calculus there is also minus infinity. It's an infinitely better universe there.

              Anyone?

Hint: It was originally a trilogy of 3 books. Then a 4th Book was added.

2nd Hint: The author is British.

I've haven't had a chance to track this one done yet. But based on your hint my instant reaction for some reason was Tolkein.

Good guess, but not correct. I can see how you might pick Tolkien as the 3 books to the LOTR could be considered 4 if you throw in the Hobbit. But then you might as well throw in the Silmarillion and make it 5. Plus Tolkien's books were in an imaginary world.

This author certainly wrote imaginary stories if you've ever read the books, but they take place, at least part of the time on our world.

More hints: The book contains references to excruciating poetry, bull dozers and the name Stavro Mueller. Additionally, there was a Talking Heads song that I swear was about book 3. I believe the name of the song is "The World was Moving."

Now, hopefully that's a few more hints...

                    Douglas Adams?
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series?

DING! DING! DING! Give that man a medal! You have the correct answer. The paraphrase that I wrote it from the first book, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It's from the section that talks about the guide itself.

If anyone hasn't read these books, I highly recommend them. You will be laughing until your gut hurts. I've not seen the movie but I understand it's not all that great. The books are tremendous.

Movies are never as good as the book. Sometimes I will refrain from reading a book that I know will be a movie, i.e. Michaeal Chriton. Then read the book afterwards.

The movie seemed to me like a Monty Python redux, but I would still recommend watching it.

BTW: Jurassic Park, the book, was WAY, WAY, WAY better than the movie. I believe I watched the movie first and yeah, it was better that way. Because then when the book was just oh so much better, it made it much more enjoyable. I couldn't put it down.

I'm also very surprised that the sequel movies never took off on the fact that some dinosaurs escaped from the island...

Oh gosh. Here we go again. Another thread veering way off track. Do I have to split this one too?

Boo, I'm gone on vacation and miss the chance to show off my Hitchhikers knowledge

Anyway, I actually highly recommend watching the movie regardless of what DA fanboys say. I actually enjoyed it more than all the books after the first one. In part, this is because I never liked how the books end and movie's conclusion was much better, IMHO.

I also enjoyed the movie. The point of view gun was the best at the end of the movie....
