    Low volume on LG 55LW6500

I am experiencing the same low volume problem on an LG 55LW6500 that I read another user having. My firmware version is 04.02.28. Even with the volume on the TV set to max (100), Vudu audio is very low and sometimes inaudible. All other streaming services (Netflix, Cinema Now) have adequate volume levels. So far, the problem has existed on every movie that I have rented (approx 4-5). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a LG Infinia 55LV5500 with the latest firmware and my VUDU volume is also very low. I'm using the built in speakers on the TV. The other apps volume is fine (netflix, amazon prime, etc.)

I have an LG LV5500 TV and have experienced this issue for some vudu movies. After extensive research and troubleshooting I'd like to offer an answer to anyone who comes across this forum. The short answer is that the problem is with certain models of LG TV's, and there is nothing Vudu can do.

The long answer....The problem is with the way that the LG tv decodes the Dolby Digital Plus audio codec that many movies use. The Vudu app just passes the audio stream to the TV, and thus is at the mercy of the hardware's decoder. I tested this in two ways: 1.) I watched the movie through the vudu app on my samsung blu-ray player, which I had configured to convert Dolby Digital (AC3) to PCM using its own hardware decoder. The LG TV then played the PCM audio stream at normal volume. 2.)I purchased a sound bar with it's own dolby decoder and connected to the LG TV with an optical cable. The LG TV then passed the AC3 stream from the LG Vudu app to the sound bar for decoding and it sounded just fine....great actually.

Now as for "why" some of the Dolby Digital movies in Vudu sounded okay, I can only offer conjecture. There must be variation in how the audio is mixed and encoded. The LG decoder must not correctly handle all variations. One such explanation is that the Dolby AC3 codec has a wider possible dynamic range between what is considered "quiet" and what is considered "loud" than do other codecs. If, in the conversion to a narrower range codec, the audio is not compressed correctly, then the lower range (i.e. NOT explosions, quiet dialogue) is encoded too close to the noise floor. Another possibility is that many movies may mix the dialogue predominantly to the center channel of a Dolby 5.1 track. Conversion to stereo may simply ignore this center track, when it SHOULD be downmixed. Again this is all just my conjecture.

Vudu tech support also confirmed that they had reached out to LG about this issue years ago, but a fix didn't happen for whatever reason. Since these are now ageing models of TV, I don't expect a resolution from LG.

The solution for you: Get a different audio decoder. If your blu-ray player has a vudu app, make sure the device passes PCM to the TV. Look in audio settings, hopefully you have the option. Or option 2, get a sound bar or other home audio system with a Dolby audio decoder and connect using optical (not analogue). The speakers on these TVs are junk anyways, so it's worth it just for the sound quality improvement.

Good Luck! I hope this helps somebody out there.

Re: Low volume on LG 55LW6500

I have been having this issue as well. So, from what you are saying, the only solution is to buy a sound bar?

So what is the reason that there are no issues with sound on other apps? Just trying to understand.

                    Thanks.
