    Connecting new LG TV to an older analog receiver

    Sorry if this has been covered before but I could use some help or advice.

    I own an LG 55LE8500 TV and am attempting to watch vudu movies and not have to listen on the TV speakers. My receiver system is old but it has always produced good results with HDTV, DVDs, music, etc. It is a Nakamichi AV400 and it only has RCA style inputs. Like most new TVs there are no RCA style outputs only the digital optical port

    I purchased from Amazon a FiiO D3 Digital to Analog Audio Converter which comes with a Micca 6ft Optical Toslink Cable. I attached it to the TV port and to the FiiO box and then the RCA cables from there to one of my VCR inputs on the receiver and powered all 3 up.

    I attempted to view a trailer but the sound coming through my speakers is very loud and scratchy like fingernails on a chalk board with a popping noise added to it! I did some internet research and could not find an exact scenario like mine but it sounds like the DTS signal could be the issue or whether my TV allows me to just use PCM output. Using the LG menu I can't see a way to either switch off or on PCM output and I don't see a way to turn off DTS from the vudu feed.

    I only paid $25 for the converter so if I am out of luck so be it. I was trying to avoid upgrading to a new receiver but I realize that may be my only option.

    I had a similar issue with my LG smart HDTV not being able to output Vudu audio to my old AIWA receiver. I tried a $30 digital audio converter and it still would not covert the Dolby Digital Plus codec that Vudu outputs. With a little more research and taking a bit of a guess I purchased an $85 Geffen Dolby digital audio converter and it worked for me.

    I have a Toslink cable out of my LG HDTV's digital audio output to the Digital audio converter and then a pair of decent red/white RCA cables out the digital audio converter into my AIWA receiver. I got lucky and it works like a champ.

    Not the cheapest alternative, dollar for dollar, but like you I didn't want to buy a new sound system when every other output device I have sends audio signal to my old receiver.

    Not for nothing, but I'd put my audio setup against any of the cheaper home theaters on the market and pretty much all of the mid range cost home theater audio systems available today. I've heard some of the premium Bose and Pioneer systems out there and it really dosen't sound too much different, maybe just the surround aspect is proportionalized better. But as for the front audio channels, the bass signals and the center audios for vocals, I don't hear it much better.
