If you do OTA DVR and want to stream YouTube, your media server's video, your media server's audio, etc. It can do much more that AppleTV.
MythTV is great (I use it every day with a HDHomeRun digital tuner), but I would not recommend it unless you are very comfortable hacking software, and willing to put hours into it. It can be pretty painful to get running (depending on your hardware, etc...) and does not have a great user interface (which doesn't bug me).

...but it does the job, and it's free (almost free: I still have to pay schedulesdirect.com for the lineup info, but that's a couple of bucks a month I think).

      So Greg,

How do you like your HD Homerun? I bought one from Rusdude a couple months ago and it's a nice little piece of hardware. Sure wish it did more than clear QAM though...

I set mine up with a cheap Hauppauge adapter I got on eBay. Took me a week just to be able to record my first program. But it works. Too bad I don't have a need to record OTA. My card only recorded analogue signals. I have since decomissioned the project and moved on the better things....

Yup, it's limited in what it can do, but thankfully that's exactly what I needed it for, so it fulfilled my requirements perfectly.

Re: Anyone got a xbox 360?

I know, some people here are fans of DirecTV, so they might be delighted in knowing that the mythical USB dual-tuner device makes appearance in Windows 7 pre-beta.

Anyway games look great on it and that all I realy use it for.
              I am the opposite.

I bought the xbox last year to use as a Media Extender as well as it has a great selection of TV and movies to download. Their HD versions are 720P

The new update this week now integrates NETFLIX streaming as well.

Between the Xbox for TV shows (and movies) and my Vudu for HD movies, I have a minimal Cable account now.
