    Video Resolution set to 480p

    Hey

I am a new Vudu customer. I have a question on my why my video resolution is setting to 480p.

I have a 1080i Mitsibushi RP TV and my Vudu is connected via Component. The input on my TV is DTV 1080i from where i watch my DISH
satellite, HD DVD movies (via the toshiba player), Blu Ray (via PS3) & Apple TV. The 1080i input on my TV is always constant. The only thing that changes to play the various devices is by selecting the appropriate input in my receiver. When i went to set my video resolution on Vudu it indicates that it set to 480p. I dont see an option (like the Apple TV) to set the Video resolution to 1080i.

-> How do i set my Vudu to match the highest resolution (1080i) on my TV?
-> what does this mean to the quality of the movie that i am watching when the vudu video resolution does not match my 1080i TV resolution?

Your Vudu supports up to 1080p over HDMI but only up to 480p over Component. There are 2 ways to get that higher 1080i resolution out of the Vudu BX100

    1) Use a direct HDMI connection instead of Component if your RP TV has HDMI inputs.

    2) Get something like an HD Fury to convert 1080i HDMI to 1080i Component.

The Vudu XL and XL2 models support 1080 over component, but it's a whole lot cheaper to get the HDMI to Component adapter.

Hmm I dont have HDMI which is why i am going through Component. The TV is 6 years old. So what does this mean to a HDX/HD movies that i download or watch instantly? Will it play always only at 480P now? and leave the TV to do the necessary upscaling?

As long as you stick with the component output of the Vudu, 480p is the best the box will put out, so you will be relying on your TV for upscaling.

Given the dominance of HDMI in the market, you may want to drop the $100 to "upgrade" your TV to work with HDMI. The HD Fury (or similar devices) will let you connect any HDMI source to your older TV.

Just get a new TV! Don't you want to keep stores in business? j/k

Honestly, though, no one here likes the fact that HD is over HDMI only on the regular box. Even installer-only XL box didn't have HD over component until very recently.

From what I recall, we were told in the beginning that boxes didn't have that functionality due to restrictions from content providers, so I guess the best VUDU could do was to convince them that this functionality was needed for XL boxes (since that's how video often gets routed in custom installs).

I also have a 6 year old RPTV (Sony), and it lacks any HDMI inputs, but it has DVI in; if yours has DVI, a HDMI to DVI converter or cable is a lot cheaper than the HD Fury, and will give you 1080i.

Just make sure your TV's DVI connection supports HDCP...

What about the case of dual output? I have my Vudu BX100 connected to my primary display via HDMI, and was considering running component signals to a 2nd TV in the room (finished downstairs area). When I watch an HDX title, will I get 480p at the 2nd display, or nothing at all (if the unit has authenticated to the primary display)?

I know that if it has authenticated via HDMI, the composite video connections get turned off. But if your component output is set to 480p, I think it might stay on...Maybe someone else can comment...

On the VUDU HD (BX100), if HDMI is connected and authenticated, all other outputs are disabled, regardless of resolution.

Thanks, Patrick. I know what I was thinking. If you have the component switch set to 480i, you can use both component and composite video at the same time. If you have component set to 480p, composite video is disabled.
