Question about the ct-100. Should I set the vudu sound in advanced options to dolby 5.1, even know the ct-100 is technically 3.1?
As an owner of CT-100, I can definitely tell you that for VUDU you need to select 5.1 option (other one is stereo, I believe). For all intents & purposes, CT-100 is a 5.1 system even though it simulates 2 rear channels.

For other sources you can either select 5.1 or 7.1. Read AVS thread I linked on first page for instructions & settings but I'll give you a hint right away -- MOVIE mode is usually best for everything. Sub & Bar levels can be tweaked based on your room & preference.

100% correct. The difference in cables is there but the player won't distinguish.

both are 100% digital audio but only the HDMI is 100% uncompressed digital.

Actually, that's not entirely true. The Vudu does not support any of the uncompressed Dolby formats. In fact, the format in the stream is DD+ which is a particular compression scheme. The Vudu outputs audio in DD5.1 only.

Uncompressed is PCM. All Dolby formats are compressed and either lossy(DD, DD+, etc) or Lossless(DolbyTrueHD).

Re: Small bedroom size surround sound

Got it all hooked up and it sounds great.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I found that a LOT of the movies are not 5.1 surround sound. I was watching ELF with the kid last night and almost ruined the movie by messing around with all the settings since the ct-100 kept saying 2.0 sound. Then I read the movie description again and it does not say enhanced sound. My bad.

I also realized that my tv does not support HDCP so the hdmi to dvi cable didn't work. Maybe will find a deal on a returned 32" tomorrow at best buy. I have spent more money trying to get the most out of this vudu box then I originally spent on the box. :,)

One more note. I also noticed that the switch was set to 480i and when I switched it to 480p it just stretched the picture vertically and looked weird, so I set it back to 408i.

Can someone confirm that if I don't have hdmi on this tv, so I hooked up with component cables, I will NOT be able to take advantage of the HD resolution for renting vudu movies.

Confirmed - no upper end HD resolution without HDMI/HDCP.

An HD Fury type device (can be had on ebay for under $100) will play HDCP with the HDMI port and convert it to Component Video - allowing you to watch HD resolutions on your non HDCP television.

@OTBFAM: Sorry for your troubles with the HD resolutions. Nded is correct - get an HD Fury and you'll be all set.

As for the surround sound - yes, there's a number of movie w/o it. It's been a gripe since the get go. But Vudu takes and encodes what is provided by the studios. Odds are that if Vudu doesn't have it in 5.1, no one else does either.

got a great deal on a vizio va26l 720p 26" lcd that has svideo, hdmi, component, etc. It will accept a 1080i feed from the vudu, but I am sure it brings it back down to 720p. Is there any reason to watch a movie in hdx rather than hd if the tv is only 720p?

You're probably better off using a 720p setting from the Vudu box since that's your native resolution... (that's what I have mine set to)
HDX will give you better quality than HD (even on your 720p display), as it is the same resolution as HD, but less compression. However, the difference is subjective and you may prefer to have instant access if you value that more. You really have a choice.

I have a 720p panel too and HDX is better than HD to my eyes. Like Greg said, it's not about resolution but about compression & resulting artifacts plus better audio.

Given that prices are the same, I prefer to watch HDX whenever possible, but I could probably live with having regular HD for movies that don't have very much going on (like comedies).

Re: Small bedroom size surround sound

I returned the vizio 26 inch tv yesterday for issues with the quality, and swapped for the vizio vo32LF which supports full 1080P.

I went into my vudu video settings and it still says: 1080i (recommended by your tv), instead of recommending 1080p. I did set it to 1080p and it work fine (except some times I just get a screen full of green). Do I have to reboot the vudu or something to recognize the new tv?

I also want to thank everyone on this forum for all their help...my wife would cringe if she knew how much my (free gift) vudu cost me in the end..new TV, new Sony Sound, cables, etc...but it is great!!

VUDU only supports 1080p/24 and I don't see it listed under your TV's specs (http://www.vizio.com/product.aspx?id=2710&pid=1506). But for all intents and purposes, 1080i will give you same image quality.

A "reboot" of your Vudu never hurts, and sometimes helps. Keep in mind that the Vudu is only telling you what the TV said was its preferred setting (don't shoot the messenger). Some 1080p TV's don't support native 24fps (Vudu 1080p is at 24fps), so they go through a convolunted 3:2 pulldown routine. If your TV is telling the Vudu to use 1080i, then I would question whether or not it has true 24fps support.

Vizio tech support confirmed that the set does support 1080p/24frames per second and is not sure why it is sending data through the hdmi that 1080i is preferred.

That being said, I would assume that if it didn't support 1080p at 24fps I would not get a picture at all. Maybe I am wrong.
