surround sound missing on new movies

I have a Sony MDP-S480 which I am watching Vudu with. My surround sound is going through a Samsung HT-X50. Since it only had toslink in, I have the sound routed through an audio switch. When I watch Blurays it works great, I get 5.1 surround. I have Lawrence of Arabia on UV and the 5.1 Surround is great. I recently got The Butler and Gravity on UV. I only get stereo out of these movies. I notice they are 5.1 plus. Is there some reason I can't get surround sound from these movies?

It is because your stereo is unable to do Dolby Digital Plus which is what Vudu and Netflix and a few other streaming providers now default to. They evidently think that EVERYONE has new equipment capable of this as well as the Dolby True-HD and DTS-Master Audio audio codecs. I am having this same problem with my Roku 3. They just will not allow us to downgrade it to plain Dolby Digital so our older than 2 years equipment can play it. If you want surround, you need to buy a new AVR.

I had reported the same issue for me a few weeks ago. The difference was my Blu-Ray output Dolby Digital 5.1 (not Plus). When I switched to Roku it only output 5.1 Plus or Stereo. My sound system didn't support Dolby Plus so I was forced to listen in stereo for a while until I bought a new surround system that did support Dolby Plus.

Unless you're Blu-Ray (or streaming box) has the ability to convert Dolby Plus to Dolby then you're stuck with stereo (or no sound) when your audio equipment can't do Dolby Plus.

Look at it this way Dolby Plus has been around for years now so it's kind of an excuse to upgrade. My previous (non- Dolby Plus) audio equipment was seven years old.

Actually, VUDU has been using DD+ from the beginning (2007). All BD players are able to decode DD+ and output other formats. The problem is Roku doesn't want to pay to license the DD/DD+ codec so they don't support DD+ -> DD for output (which is why there is an AAC stereo option).

To the original poster: I would guess (but of course don't know) that your Sony BD player will let you set the output to DD (and will re-encode the DD+ to DD). Take a look at the player's audio settings...

I'm having the same problem when listening on my Philips soundbar htl2101a. My solution is to buy an new system with dolby plus.
