    Who killed my HDCP?

    I have a 57 inch Toshiba rear projection HD with a HDCP compliant DVI input. For over a year now I have been watching HD from my HD DVD through a HDMI/DVI cable connected directly between the HD DVD and the television, with no problems. After I bought my Vudu, I connected both the Vudu and the HD DVD to my Onkyo 506 receiver (HDMI passthrough)with HDMI cables, and the receiver to the television with the HDMI/DVI cable. I was able to play the HD DVD successfully with this setup. However, when I tried to play the Vudu, I got the noncompliance notice -- and no picture. Moreover, I now get no picture when trying to view any HDCP source, including the HD DVD, regardless whether it's connected through the receiver or directly to the television, as it used to be. It is as if the VUDU "blew out" my television's HDCP "handshake." Help, anyone?

            If you didn't touch anything, who connected the devices?

            Is the Vudu "new" to your config, or was everything working together for a while? Does the Toshiba website offer any advice on this error message for your TV. You might want to go ahead and post your TV make/model, and also your Vudu System ID (printed on the bottom of the Vudu).

            Can you get your Toshiba to work with non HDMI sources?

              4. selected the HDMI input on your TV

              and got no data from your DVD player?

              I don't think the VUDU HDCP is the problem here since you were seeing our connectivity message. This happens after we gave up on HDCP. The error mesage is then displayed in the clear.

                In answer to the two previous questions, here is exactly what I did after hooking everything up as described in my initial statement: 1) from the VUDU movies page selected "Dark Knight" in HDX; 2) while Dark Night was downloading, watched a HD(HDCP) movie on my HD DVD; 3) just before the HD movie was over, switched to VUDU to see if the download was finished, it was, but it displayed the HDCP noncompliance notice and then a blank screen; 4) I went back to check the HD movie on the HD DVD; and now it too had a blank screen but continued to play the soundtrack (connected via Toslink); 5) started troubleshooting -- unplugged everything for 30 seconds, bypassed receiver, checked all connections, switched input to other sources, successfully played non-HDCP HD DVD disc on HD DVD player(using HDMI/DVI imput), switched back to VUDU home screen -- everything worked fine except no video (but Toslink sound worked fine) on the HDMI/DVI input when attempting to view only HDCP movies from either VUDU or HD DVD(continued to get noncompliance notice on VUDU)(note: before I tried HDCP on VUDU, HDCP worked fine on HD DVD).

                  So when you connect the VUDU box now do you see the error message again for about 30 seconds? Do you see the vudo logo when you power cycle the VUDU box whil eit is connected?

                  When you say that you disconnected "everything" you also mean the power cable of your TV and Onkyo, right?

                  There is no way to physically "blow out" your HDCP. You had the Onkyo connected to your TV, right?

                  Can you please provide your system ID and leave your VUDU box powered on after you retried to connect to your TV? I would like to check out some internal error messages.

                    Also, the Vudu uses HDCP ALL the time and not just when viewing content. So if you are able to see the Vudu menu, then the HDCP handshaking is correct between the Vudu and your receiver or whatever. Something else funky is happening. As Volker suggested, definitely post your system ID along with the dates and times of the problems.

                    Something strange is definitely going on.

                      I stand corrected on one item: the VUDU main screen comes on for a few seconds now and then goes blank with the noncompliance message on for 30 seconds. I rebooted everything at around 10:30 a.m. Eastern standard Time today and checked out everything -- everything still works except for HDCP. My client information is: 0xB26C; my MAC # is: 00:18:f9:04:1a:f3 (as best as I can make it out). It is now 11:25 a.m., and I'm now going to repower VUDU and leave it powered until further instruction.

                        Thanks, I got your logs. There is an issue with either your HDMI cable or the TV.

                            volker.schildwach AT Vudu DOT com so the spam bots don't pick up your address....
