I'm trying out a Shield TV 2019 as an alternative/augmentation to my Chromecast Ultra for VUDU UHD Dolby Vision+Atmos with my older LG B6 series OLED. So far, I really like the new device; however, I'm having an intermittent issue with Dolby Vision.
Sometimes the image exhibits cyan/magenta alternating bands on subtle gradients of white/gray - such as the halo around a bright light, a beam of light shining through haze/smoke, or the transition between shades of gray in a cloudy sky.
Exiting playback of the title and re-launching sometimes resolves the issue; other times it causes the issue on a title that had been playing back correctly. Dropping the STV2019 back to HDR-10 completely resolves the issue (never occurs on HDR-10). Force stopping the app and restarting or hard power cycling the STV2019 and/or the rest of the system does not resolve or create the issue.
The issue seems to be linked somehow to another one. When I exit playback of a DoVi title, the STV2019 re-syncs HDMI and the Watchlist screen is very washed out. If I back up one more screen, HDMI re-syncs again and normal gamma/color returns. However, re-launching a DoVi title after this has happened results in the banding issue occurring (but this is not the only time it occurs).
I have not noticed the above issue with DoVi from Netflix.
My system:
Shield TV 2019 > Denon AVR-X8500H > LG OLED55B6P
Shield version: 8.1.1 (32.7.301.64) *This is the third hotfix to the standard 8.1.0+ release.
Denon version: 7500-9031-1123-0025
LG version: 05.30.60
The STV2019 must be set to Dolby Vision (23.976 Hz) due to lack of support in the TV for 4K DoVi frame rates greater than 30 Hz. Match Content Color Space is ON and Set To Default is ON for video output/resolution; however, I have tried numerous combinations of these settings and found them to have no impact on the issue.
The AVR-X8500H passes through DoVi (including VUDU) correctly for all other source devices (Chromecast Ultra, Oppo UDP-203, Apple TV 4K).
VUDU UHD titles/time stamps where the issue is visible:
Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood: Prevalent in the B&W clips from Bounty Law and the interview with Rick and Cliff that open the movie. Evidences as blotchy areas of the screen that are tinted slightly cyan or magenta.
Oblivion (8:29-30): After Jack's ship is struck by lighting, it plummets to earth. Cyan banding is visible in the cloudy sky background.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (20:21-29): As Credence claps his hands to scare away a bird perched on the window sill, the camera slowly pans around two bright white lights. Alternating cyan/magenta bands are visible in the halos around these lights.
Alita: Battle Angel (46:15): Two motorcycles approach the remnants of a fire grenade. A cyan ring is visible around the headlight of the motorcycle on the left, as well as some banding in the beams of both headlights (the shot is very quick).
The issue occurs at other points; these are the ones I used to identify it. I first noticed it on Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, then checked the other titles to confirm.
