    Ps3 hdx 3d showing at 720p

    Hi, I just subscribe to vudu and we rent frankenweenie 3d hdx. My tv is new and we watch bluray movies at 1080 no problem. When playing this movie even if it says hdx (1080p) the tv reads at 720p. I found a way to switch between hdx and hd from the menu on vudu and my tv shows both content on 720p. Wonder if anyone else have this problem?. I paid for a hdx and I'm only getting hd?? come on vudu...

    Hopefully Jake will see this and verify, but I believe streaming 3d content is limited to 720p due to the method available to app designers to pass the 3d signal. I have seen another post on here about it, just not sure exactly where.

      Yeah, PS3 apps can only do 720p for 3D output. It is still using the 1080p source if you are watching HDX, so will look significantly better than a 720p 3D movie, both because of the extra bits HDX has available and because the L/R frames of the 3D movies are encoded in the same frame (top/bottom or left/right).

          HDX comes through as 720 on PS3

          In addition to the issues with 3D on the PS3, I've found that HDX actually comes through as 720 on a PS3 (VUDU speed check OK'd HDX by wide margin, PS3 firmware up to date, HDMI cable).

          This is confirmed on a Samsung display by having the display list the picture info. The PS3 has no problem displaying blue ray in full 1080.

              OK. These posts were all referring to 3D being limited to 720p. Are you confirming that non-3D streaming is also limited to 720p on the Sony PS3?

                I'm pretty sure I get 1080p from HDX, my TV does not show a resolution change from 1920x1080 when I play one.

                  Can you confirm that this is VUDU coming through a Sony PS3, and that the HDX movie was streaming? If you ARE getting 1080p on VUDU through a PS3, I must have some wrong PS3 setting, but I can't figure out what it is.

                  For me, even the trailers or previews listed as HDX come through as 720. How about for you?

                    The PS3 system settings (and TV capabilities) determine the actual output resolution. You will always get the same output format no matter what quality you are streaming. The PS3 will up or downscale to its system settings.

                    So with the VUDU App you can only control the streaming/picture quality, not the output format to the TV.

                      Showing 1920x1080 watching an HDX movie from PS3, I'd check video settings on the PS3 for something out of sorts.

                        Thank you for your input. As far as I can tell, the Sony PS3 has two relevant settings:

                        Adjust video output settings and DVD upscaler.
                        The output settings are 1080p (connected by HDMI). BDs are displayed in 1920 x 1080p (that's what the Samsung info display shows when PS3 is playing a Blu-Ray).

                        PS3 Upscaler is set to normal, but this should not apply anyway, if the VUDU app is passing high def.

                        I'm at a loss to explain this. Would like to prove that the VUDU app is passing 1920 x 1080, but there probably is no way to prove this.

                          It has been over 2 years now when I posted about the resolution of 3D movies shown on the ps3, yet all this talk about how there were discussions with Sony about changing the restrictions has gotten us nowhere.

                          Your company is technically the only way to get 3D BluRay movies on pretty much any device, so to have it limited at 720p. And no, marketing speak about your encoding doesn't change the fact that it's still 720p, which then means it's 2 frames at 360p each. I'll admit that there is some improvement over watching a downloaded trailer or other demo movie that's in 3D, but for the prices you are charging for your 3D downloads, it makes more sense to buy the hard copy discs and at least get the truly full resolution.

                          But if you can get full resolution, true 1080p playback working, we are playing a different game.

                          So, tell me.... How does this get fixed? There's got to be a way.

                            Actually, this has been answered on the forums several times since then But to reiterate/clarify...

                            The source stream is 1080P (actually 3D content is encoded L/R anamorphically so it's 960x1080 for each "eye") but the PS3 is limited to 720P for 3D stereo output for any apps/games. That 960x1080 is scaled to 1280x720 output, so it's in no way "360P" (which would imply 360 lines of vertical resolution).

                            There has been talk about implementing bitstreamed audio output for the PS3 as it is now supported for apps, but the 720P 3D limitation is not something Sony is likely to change.
