    New Vudu on PS3... eh?

So I've been getting e-mails from Vudu lately telling me I've been selected to be an early tester of the new Vudu PS3 app. The e-mails and the website show a fairly different look for the app, but the version running on my PS3 is the same old app I've been using for the last couple of years. Nothing has changed, and I get no prompt to update the app when I use it.

Then tonight, I got an e-mail asking me to take a survey telling them what I think of the all new PS3 Vudu app. Here's the content of the e-mail I got tonight:

Tell us what you think about the new VUDU

    Hi [Name Here],

How do you like the new VUDU on your PlayStation 3??

Please let us know your thoughts with this quick 6-question survey. Your opinions matter and will help us continue making VUDU even better!

Click the button to begin our short 6-question survey.
While I'd very much like to take the survey and give my opinion, it's sort of hard to do that when I still haven't seen the thing in action. How am I supposed to get this new version of the app onto the PS3 in the first place? No instructions were ever sent to me, and the PSN Store appears to only have the plain old vanilla app.

Is the email address where you received the email the same email address you are using for Vudu on your PS3?

Re: New Vudu on PS3... eh?

      FWIW:

I turned on VUDU last night on my usual nighttime PS3 and it was a new UI for sure. I've looked in my email and I have nothing about it. I also turned on VUDU on my PS4 today, similar new UI. Downloaded VUDU from the PlayStation Store on another PS3 today and it wanted to update to "2.something". So I let it and it was the same newer UI. Both PS4 and PS3 it was already installed on showed no updates, which is in truth what I recalled, that there was an update for the PS3 app sometime in the past.

      UI Version: 3.0.132280

      PS3 VUDU Client Version: 3.1.0 (rev 117811)

      PS4 VUDU Client Version: 3.1.0 (rev 117845)

Yes. I use the same e-mail address for all of my streaming services/game consoles.

We can update a new UI without updating the App itself. Please launch the app and see if you have the new UI. Just checking the app version outside and waiting for the app update are not necessary.

Re: New Vudu on PS3..Double Thumbs Down!!!

So until the new Vudu interface came along, I was able to bitstream Dolby Digitial Plus/Dolby True HD/DTS HD audio from PS3 Vudu to my receiver (as verified with my receiver's playback indicator) after the "upgrade" this is no longer the case - even for movies previously purchased on Vudu. Since I can still stream Netflix HD Audio to my reciever via my PS3, I know the problem is not my setup/receiver/PS3 et al. - it's Vudu's problem.

Vudu used to be my "go to" streaming moving source because it had the best HD picture & sound available, but now it's just a last resort unless they can get this fixed quick....

The PS3 VUDU app has never supported bit streaming audio (and VUDU movies are only encoded in DD or DD+). Also the update was a UI only update, it didn't update the native app, so nothing related to audio output could have changed.

If you are or have ever seen DD+, TrueHD, or DTS from the VUDU app to your receiver, that could only be because the PS3 is re-encoding the multichannel PCM audio. In fact, the VUDU app doesn't even control the output format, it uses whatever you have set in the PS3 audio settings. If you would prefer an encoded format, you can change it there (though it won't actually provide better quality than 5.1/7.1 LPCM).

Vudu doesn't have movies that are TrueHD. Dolby Digital + is as high as they go. Vudu doesn't do DTS at all.

So...since Vudu movies are encoded in DD+, I still should be seeing the Blue Light of Audio Goodness from my receiver. In fact I am - from Netflix. Since I didn't change anything in my PS3 output settings (and I checked in case something odd had happened and they changed randomly) and Netflix still outputs in the encoded bitstream format, that leaves Vudu/Walmart as the Villain in this story....I know that there shouldn't be a difference in the audio quality, but I trust my $1200 receiver more than my $300 PS3....and the PS3 supports bitstream presumably for that very reason.

So since VUDU movies ARE encoded in DD+ per your post above, then my PS3 should be (and was until now) streaming the DD+ to my AVR via bitstream. On the off chance something weird happened to my settings, I reconfirmed my PS3 audio & video settings are still setup for bitstream. And - I still get the blue bitstream light on my AVR when I stream Netflix from my PS3.

Conclusion - this is clearly a VUDU issue; whether part of the updated VUDU/Walmart UI interface change or an ancillary VUDU app change. My audio playback is degraded - EVEN ON MOVIES I PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR! - and until it's fixed VUDU is no longer my first choice for streaming video.

For the PS3, you'll need to uncheck all of the PCM options in the sound menu if you want your receiver to show Dolby Digital.

                        -------------
So that's the frustrating thing - have confirmed audi options are still set as only bitstream out - no pcm - and PS3 continues to reliably stream Netflix bitstream DD+ or TruHD audio to my AVR - but not Vudu. Previously reliably streamed Vudu from PS3 in high quality bitstream but "something" has changed.

Again, VUDU has *never* bitstreamed (defined as just passing through the original source audio without processing) DD+ on the PS3. The app currently decodes the audio to multi channel PCM and then the PS3 output hardware re-encodes to whatever the PS3 audio output is set to (7.1 LPCM, DD, whatever). We plan on implementing true bitstreaming in the future (and it will be on the PS4 very soon) but it will be a while for the PS3.

Nothing has changed in the VUDU PS3 player related to audio, etc in over a year, so whatever you are seeing is not related to any VUDU app changes.
