Roku makes great players. If you don't mind refurbished products, connected Blu-ray players are good too and can probably be bought for under 50 bucks.

Our Panasonic Blu-ray player works great. With Black Friday coming up, you can easily pick up a networked player for $40-$50.

I keep hearing stories here of movies that don't show up on the Roku because the audio encoding is incompatible. Maybe that's rare, but something to look into first.

I wouldn't hold your breath on the Apple TV app.

I strongly recommend the Roku 2 or 3. The 3 has a headphone jack in the remote that's really convenient for watching movies without disturbing the other people in your house. The interface is super easy, and it's really snappy. I would lean towards the 3 right now, but the 2 is really nice and it's less than $70 if you want to save some cash.

That can be fixed by switching your Roku's audio mode. A bit of a PITA, but it shouldn't be enough to affect your purchasing decision unless everything else was pretty much equal.

Re: Help on best Sub $100 Vudu Set top box

There's really no choice, and I'm not saying that because one box is so much betrer than another, but because there's really only set top product line that has a vudu app, and that's the various Rokus. While Roku is very good at what it does, android set top boxes are incredible. But Vudu in all their pigheadedness refuses to release a Vudu app for android TV OS, despite the fact that they have an app for Sony TVs that run android TV.

              EDIT

Also I should mention, Roku is releasing a rebranded Roku1 as the Roku SE this Black Friday online and at brick and mortar stores like bestbuy, walmart, and Target for 25 bucks. I'd say buy it from Walmart because the Walmart Rokus always have a Vudu shortcut button on the remote (not the 3's though for some reason). It will also only be 25 bucks on Black Friday. After that it reverts to 50.
