Hard Drive to reduce internet useage

I'm considering buying an older Vudu box but I heard they don't work anymore? Is this true? Also has anyone been able to find a way to download movies but still play in app. Like a hard drive connected to a roku4. I ask because I'm hitting my 1TB limit with comcast almost monthly.

The studios don't seem to want you to download. There were several initiatives over the years, but nothing came of them. I'm sure they worry about security, and downloads would take revenue from their parent company.

Here's a partial list of companies owned by Comcast:
    Universal Pictures
    DreamWorks Animation
    Focus Features
    Gramercy Pictures
    Illumination Entertainment
    Hulu
    Chiller
    Syfy

Vudu is a service, not a device. Are you thinking of something else? Game consoles will let you download...

And remember that downloading won't make your internet usage any less - you are still transferring a movie - unless you want to do it for watching the same movie multiple times.

In the past, vudu had it's own box. They were capable of downloading movies for storage, but those haven't been available for about 5 years. There are a few devices that can download vudu movies, for instance WD streaming devices, but you would have to buy it used.

I would not recommend buying the old VUDU STB box - the hardware (and HDD inside it) is almost 10 years old, so it's very slow compared to modern devices, and will not get the latest UI updates.

You might try looking for a used/refurbished PS3 - it supports download and is still one of the fastest devices in terms of UI performance/streaming.

Will the Xbox one S allow this?

My kids watch the same movies over and over again. Download once will make major difference for me...

Re: Hard Drive to reduce internet useage

I found myself a refurbished PS3 for sale online on a classified ads website. http://www.for-sale.com/ I believe it was called. It was an absolute bargain and works like a dream for downloading movies. There are plenty of used PS3s for sale online. Have a look on the likes of eBay and Craigslist. Lots to choose from and it is very much a buyers market. You could even buy an unfurnished example and pay for it to be refurbished yourself. There are many services out there offering this service. Hope this helps! I've been having bags of fun with my PS3 ever since in all honesty. I know they are not that old but it certainly feels like retro gaming compared to today's consoles. (OK I admit it, I've been using it for gaming too, my bad). All-in-all I think it isan excellent choice if an old Vudu box can't be obtained.

No, it does not help. PS3 is not my cup of tea.

I still have a WD TV Live Hub. It still works to download movies from Vudu. They are discontinued, but you may be able to track one down.

Re: Hard Drive to reduce internet useage

Thanks - I've Started my search for a PS3- I really wish VUDU would see that this will be an issue for all its customers in the certain future and a download device is going to be a necessity. What sucks is that I just bought an xbox one, so convincing my wife is a whole other story.

I'm 2 days away from the end of the month and I've used 90% of my cap. I cant even buy the xbox games I want because they take up 40-50 gbs per download. Once you get those notices from Comcast you'll understand how I feel. We don't even watch our UHD movies anymore and I've completely canceled Netflix 4K because I was way over the 1 TB when watching anything in 4K.
