    Hi there. I'm new to this forum, but very familiar with forum setups and use.

    I just recently went from like 1996 to 2011 in about 2 weeks. I can't believe I didn't do this earlier.

    Anyway onto the issue. I bought an LG 42" LV5500 Smart HDTV. I love this TV! It is simply amazing how good the picture quality is. What is even more amazing is how good the picture quality is on Vudu streaming WiFi through the wireless network adapter that is tied to my wireless router.

    The problem that I am having is as such. Any other movie host, ie; Netflix, Cinema Now, Amazon OD, etc. all broadcast sound through my old school surround sound system.

    Here's the scenario: I have my Smart HDTV as my hub (I don't have a modern day receiver). My Blu-Ray, HD Cable Box and VCR all route into my HDTV by way of HDMI cables, and Y,R,W RCA cables for the VCR. I have a Toslink cable outputing audio to a Toslink-to-RCA converter and then R/W RCA cables running to my 1996 AIWA stereo.

    Like said earlier, all the other movie hardward (Blu-Ray, HD Cable box, VCR and other Streaming video contents will supply the system with audio to my AIWA reciever for surround sound with the exception of Vudu. Now my understanding is that Vudo outputs surround sound using Dolby Digital Plus 5.1; is this why my audio reciever is not translating the audio to the speakers?

    Or, is my new HDTV not capable of outputing through the digital optical audio output to the DDP level? Or, is it the digital optical audio cable (Toslink) to RCA adapter not being able to transmit the signal, Or is it my old school AIWA audio receiver just not up to the modern day challenge?

    Help me out here. I don't want to go out and spend $300 bucks on a middle road receiver and still not be able to deliver audio output from my HDTV to the Receiver to the Speakers.

    The TV should transcode DD+ to regular Dolby Digital. If your receiver can not decode Dolby Digital, then it might not work properly.
    Try to disable the speakers of your TV in its audio setup and see if that makes a difference.

      If your stereo is just taking RCA analog in, then it's not the stereo's problem.

      It's probably an issue with the connection between the TV and the optical to RCA converter. Does the TV have an option in its settings to convert the audio output to "PCM stereo"? If so, that might fix it (maybe the toslink converter doesn't support Dolby Digital surround?)

        Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the TV does not have a setting to convert the audio to PCM. I've read a few threads of other users experiencing this type of issue. I also tried turning off the front speakers on the TV, but there is no sound at all under that setup.

        Just not sure I can justify buying a modern day receiver just so I can listen to Vudu surround sound.

        Any chance Vudu may??? release a firmware update that allows the user to select audio code?

        Just trying to figure this out in the most cost effective way.

          Thanks for the suggestion. I think you may be right. Looking into the DAC I bought, it does not support Dolby Digital input. So back to Amazon the DAC goes and I found a DAC that supports Dolby audio input.

          Do you think this will?

            I'm pretty sure that will work. Though if you can't find it for significantly less than $129 you might want to look at some of the lower end home theater receivers...

            As an example, the Pioneer VSX 520-K is a decent receiver at the lower end with a *lot* of modern features like HDMI 1.4, DD/DTS decoding, and 5x80W amp, for about $200. And I'm sure there are other brands with similar features down to about $150. Anyway, not particularly endorsing the Pioneer or trying to get you to spend more money, just pointing out 5.1 receivers have gotten really cheap! (and I'd think even the cheapest one would do a lot more than what that dedicated DD converter does...)

              Thanks again Jake. I was able to return my $30 DAC and pick the DAC hyperlinked above for $80 shipped. We'll see how it works?

              I'll keep the thread updated once I get the part.
