    Poor Perfomance w/SlingLink Turbo

I am unable to directly connect my new Vudu to my router, so I decided to go with a SlingLink Turbo powerline a/v ethernet adapter. I've got it working - the problem is, my dsl connection is 4mbps, but the connection speed at the Vudu is only 1mbps. Any tips or suggestions on how to improve speed to the Vudu unit would be appreciated.

One thing you can check is to make sure that the powerline ethernet interfaces are on the same "leg" of power. If the signal has to cross from one "leg" to the other then you can have some degredation of the transmission.

Also, make sure the SlingLink is NOT powered into an outlet strip or surge protector.

Flourescent lighting can also degrade the powerline Ethernet performance. If you have any try turning them off to see if they make a difference. Some types will affect the speed and some won't.
When I was testing out some powerline ethernet adapters at hometo use at my girlfirends, I could get 30+mbs speeds unless two specific flourescent lights were on. When they were on the speeds dropped below 4mbs. They rest of my flourescent lights had little or no effect.

What you say may be true, but I don't immediately see how lighting would affect the performance of a powerline extender.

It causes some type of interference on the electrical line causing it to drop down the connection speed to have a reliable connection. The same thing can happen when things like hair dryers are on the same circuit as the powerline ethernet devices.

As a X-10 protocol user I can fully understand how cheap ballast in a flourecent light can cause problems. I acutlally had one that when I turned it on would send enought noise down the line my receiver would pick it up on the coaxial digital audio jack and play static. I found that the noise filters helps with motors, etc.

Florescent lights actually flicker. It's so fast you can't see them. And they new fangled curly-Q lights flicker even faster. This flickering frequency is set by basically an RF oscillator. And if the light is poorly constructed and not filtered well, that resultant RF can get onto the AC mains and spread throughout the house.

Other things that might cause issues are touch lamps or touch lighting systems. Some of those are pretty cheap as well. These work by using the metal in the frame of the light as part of the capacitance in the oscillator circuit. When your finger touches it, the capacitance changes and the oscillator is pulled off frequency. The circuitry detects this and turns the light on or off, etc.
