    VUDU affecting my wireless access?

first off, apologize if this post is a duplicate. i searched but couldn't find something similar, but if it exists, please tell me to shut up and keep looking elsewhere

i have had 2 different dsl services with two different pieces of hardware (just moved from a linksys wireless router/covad to 2wire 2701hg-b/AT&T). the vudu is connected directly to the 2wire device (and continues to work quite peachily).

however, i have an imac (primary home pc) from which i connect wirelessly to the network. the available bandwidth over wireless varies widely when the vudu is connected, and it seems to decline over time. this evening it was slowly shutting down. it got down to about 89kbps. i unplugged the vudu, and within 10-15 sec it jumped back up to ~3.5kbps. this was true with both dsl services and both pieces of hardware.

during these tests, i had no other devices powered on or plugged into the router. i also took a look at the utilization of the vudu and it never edged above 2kbps.

any ideas? anybody have this problem? i'm going to try some more experiments, but thought i would throw this out at the same time...

That's very strange. If the Vudu is hardwired, it should have no affect on your wireless speeds. If it does, then there's a router problem. Do you have another computer you can hook up via ethernet? If so, then try downloading or uploading a large file from that machine. Then try using your wireless.

Could be that you're getting stepped on by another wireless network in the area? I've heard that a nearby 802.11n network can obliterate your "g" network bandwidth.

i do have another computer attached via ethernet. i've tried some simultaneous downloads between the wireless-connected computer and the ethernet-connected computer, and they seem to behave predictably (with the vudu disconnected).

i agree that this seems to be more likely to be router/network setup related. but, since i had the same behavior on two different routers, i was hoping that someone solved this already

i should mention that when the ethernet-connected computer and the vudu are both connected, there doesn't seem to be any performance degradation on the ethernet-connected computer. it is just when the vudu and the wireless connected are the only active boxes on the network.

i guess i'll keep experimenting, so that i can have more detail to share.

Go ahead and post your system ID number here in case the Vudu engineers decide they want pull some logs and see if they spot anything.
