    Very Disappointing Start

Hello 1st time post. I am having a problem with staying connected with wireless access. I have a Linksys WRT54GC wireless router and a Linksys WGA54G Wireless game adapter. Not have one day under my belt I notice that it will disconnect after 5 minutes. Now I cannot get a solid connection. My speed of internet is 4-7Mbps. The wireless setup is about 10 feet away in another room. It seems that the problem started after new software 1.10. I'm trying to see if this Vudu box is stable enough before my 30 day are up. I hope someone can help me get this problem fix. The Vudu box is the future if stability is not an issue. Thanks

Send a PM to RonV for help. FWIU, gaming adapters are not good things to use for the Vudu. They tend to be quite problematic. Ron has helped a lot of people with wireless issues with the Vudu. He's our expert in that area!

Wireless gaming adapters are usually the cause of the disconnection not the VUDU. Wireless is susceptible to wireless phones, microwave ovens, etc.

Since you are only about 10 ft. away from your router is there anyway you can test with a network cable? If I am right your problems will go away with the VUDU.

Also make sure you gaming adapter has the latest firmware. It has been documented that some of the firmware's out there have issue with streaming and dropping connections.

I have been using the VUDU wirelessly since the roll out and haven't had problems. But I am using 3rd party firmware that allows a router like Buffalo and Linksys work in "Client Mode". Client mode is what gaming adapters use but most of them on the market charge twice as much for a single feature that doesn't work well.

A couple of questions. What brand and model is your main wireless router? Does it work OK with other wireless devices?

Welcome to the Vudu Forum Gazad. We're glad you've joined the community. RonV is our resident expert on wireless functionality. We do have plenty of successful wireless installations in the Vudu install base. It all comes down to figuring out what is causing your installation to experience interference.

Besides what has already been suggested, I'd also encourage you to look at the following:

1 - Wireless routers/adapters claim 11 frequencies, but for all practical purposes there are really only 3 to use 1, 6, and 11. Try switching between those to see if you get better results.

2 - By any chance are you using anything that requires "B" mode (like a Wii or some other network appliance)? If so that will really put a cramp on your setup. For my network I have 2 wireless access points setup, one in B/G mode and one dedicated to G only mode.

Last but not least, a wired connection is definitely something to consider with your extremely close proximity. With any luck you'll be watching Bourne in HD soon!

You may also want to try one of the powerline ethernet products that uses your electrical wiring as the network. If you can get a good enough speed through that, they are less susceptible to interference. You can play around with using different outlets in the room where your router is to get one that is "closer" from a circuit standpoint, to the outlet you use for your Vudu. Also, if you use one of them, plug them directly in the wall, not a power strip. The power strip degrades the performance substantially.

I want to tell what is on my network. My wireless router is a Linksys WRT54GC. Connected to it wired is a Tivo, i-mac, xbox 360. Wireless items is another Tivo, laptop and PS3. Everything seems to work fine wireless since my Vudu problem. I might have a situation in the room I have the Vudu. In the same cabinet the wireless Tivo and a Terk Universal Remote Extender Kit is used so I can keep the cabinet closed per wife. I did have it wired and I turn off Vudu to watch tv,not Tivo and my connection dropped. My network adapter firmware is up-to-date. Thanks

I didn't understand this part. Are you saying that the Vudu connection to the network dropped while you had a wired connection to your router? Who is your ISP?

My Vudu was wired when I lost connection. My ISP is Mediacom.

I'm a little confused now. Are you saying your Vudu now isn't working even when you are using the wired connection?

After I went from wireless to wired connection it dropped out once. It has been solid after that. My problem is with the wireless connection not being solid. I would like to have a wired connection but that is not an option. thanks for all the replies.

OK, if it is in the same cabinet as your "wireless" Tivo, you should be able to hook a hub to that point of service and have both devices (Tivo and Vudu) share the one wireless link. I'm not sure if your gaming adapter can handle that, or if you'll need something like a WAP.

                        Re: Very Disappointing Start

The networking requirements of the Vudu are far, far greater than that of the TiVo. So while the gaming adapter may work with the TiVo, it might not with the Vudu.

I would get a wireless router and use it instead of the gaming adapter or get a powerline adapter and use that.

                          Re: Very Disappointing Start

I wonder how many people have their router next to their A/V system. My router is in my upstairs office, my HD outfit is in the basement, and my bedroom TV is down the hall. My house wiring is too old for the powerlines.

I'm in IT, so I enjoyed playing around with setting up a bridge, but for the general consumer it's a tall order to hook up a wireless gaming adapter/bridge/tomato-based wireless client-mode bridge.

It seems that if Vudu takes off, they may have to come out with a unit with wireless in it, like TiVo, even if it jacks up the cost.

We (Ron, IIRC) have suggested offering a powerline kit as an optional add-on, but really, my feeling is, this is no different than an Xbox, Wii, etc, where you have to figure out your own network setup. While it might be in VUDU's interest to make it easier for the consumer, as a disinterested third party I feel like it's really not VUDU's concern at all, kind of like an ISP providing a customized browser. I had three Buffalo WBR-G54s using WDS until I had other electrical work done, at which time I had them install boxes and run Cat5 cables through the attic, and then I punched down the jacks myself. Pretty good for a guy who never did more than rewiring an old 4-post phone jack before.

                              Ed,

You can't hook up more than one device to a "Game" adapter or the "TiVO" wireless adapter. They are designed to host only one MAC address and thats it. If you do hook up more that one then strange things happen on the network. I have tried this just to validate with a Linksys router in client mode and plugged in both my laptop and the VUDU. The VUDU lost network connection randomly.
