    Proximity should not affect strength. You might want to try a different frequency for your wireless. They clam 11 frequencies, but there are really only 3. Use 1, 6, or 11 and see if it gets better.

    SIDEBAR: Wireless bandwidth is divided by the number of wireless devices. If you have 2, each gets about 1/2 the bandwidth, 3 gives each about 1/3 of the bandwidth. If others near you are using the same (or nearby) frequency, you are having to share!

      The Vudu is connected to my router with an eternet cable and the network is only being shared by the Tivo and laptop.

      How do I change the frequency on the router?

        Access your routers control pages. This is typically done with an internet browser pointed to the IP address of your router (i.e. mine is 192.168.1.1)

            well it took me a while to get back to this, but now that i'm back in town and the kids are all asleep...

            it is "seeming" to work. "seeming" in that it is currently showing a connection and downloading a movie... but is a bit slow, so i'll see if the movie makes it.

            pretty ez actually. i have tiger on the mac mini in question. i went into the sharing section and shared the airport connection on the built-in ethernet port. i had to change one item on the firewall settings - enabling personal web sharing. connection light went from red to yellow in about 30 seconds.

            now i just need to figure out how to get the vudu light from yellow to green, but the hard part is over!

              and, by the way Greg, i am shocked that a wise video IT engineer like yourself doesn't have at least one Mac !

              i go both ways myself, but never bother with video on windows...

                Have you tried using any of the ethernet over powerline products. They are a heck of a lot easier to set up and seem to be much more stable and predictable once they are.

                  no i haven't tried going through the powerline yet. as an fyi, this was pretty easy. it took 2 clicks and 30 seconds.

                  part of the reason it made sense for me is because i already had the mac mini in my entertainment center hooked up to my a/v receiver. i had bought a new computer and decided to repurpose my mini as an entertainment box (primarily my itunes and iphoto libraries) + some external backup NAS that i can bury in the "entertainment" closet. so, now that i have a vudu, it was the path of least resistance because i didn't have to buy any more equipment (not that i have any problem with buying more gadgets.. but i get in less trouble .

                  all that being said, if i had to choose between buying a computer to use as a bridge and going with a powerline device or wireless, i might try that. but i already have the computer, and now i've eliminated a 25 foot cat 6 cable

                    If your light is still yellow, try turning off your Mac's firewall. If you are behind a router, you won't need it on anyhow - it's redundant.

                    Also, if I understand my internet sharing on the Mac, it takes your available bandwidth from the airport and splits it in half giving one to one half to the main machine and the other half to whatever is connected to it. Still, it should be fast enough to stream since you only need 2 Mb/sec to do it.

                    And the yellow light will gradually go green. You should be able to go into advanced network settings and reset your connection data. That will wipe out the quality database and start you from scratch.

                      Just for anyone's information. I was able to simply share my internet connection from my iMac and vudu box. The procedure was simple.

                      1. go to System Preferences
                      2. click Sharing
                      3. check Internet Sharing
                      4. click on share your connection from airport
                      5. to computers using ethernet

                      After this I was able to browse and find a movie to rent.

                        I am trying to use this set up as well.

                        Vudu connected to Mac Mini via ethernet, Mac Mini connected to wireless router by Airport. Mac Mini connected to US IP address via VPN.

                        My Mac Mini Airport has an IP address of 192.168.1.8 and it's ethernet port has a self assigned IP address of 169.254.184.198

                        When I check my network status on the Vudu it is set to Auto configure network address, but it is picking an IP address of 192.168.2.4.

                        If I run the Test Network I get a green tick for the Connection within the home, but fail at the Internet connection stage. If I disconnect the VPN and just run off my ISP connection I get a green tick for Connection within the home and Internet connection but fail at Connection to Vudu.

                        I'm running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)

                        Anyone have any advice/suggestions?

                          The 192.168.2 subnet is what Apple uses to assign addresses when using Internet sharing. Your Mac will appear to have an "Unconfigured IP of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx on the non-sharing side of things. So it sounds like you have internet sharing configured correctly. You are sharing Airport to Ethernet - correct?


                          If I run the Test Network I get a green tick for the Connection within the home, but fail at the Internet connection stage. If I disconnect the VPN and just run off my ISP connection I get a green tick for Connection within the home and Internet connection but fail at Connection to Vudu.
                          Well, the VPN is the first issue. First of all - why do you need it? Second, it's quite possible that the packets the Vudu needs to send and receive don't traverse well over the VPN gateway. Some things just don't. Third, VPNs tend to be much slower due to the encryption that is used.

                          Generally you can specify a VPN so that only traffic needed on the VPN traverses it. All other traffic would go on the internet. There's a little checkbox in the Advanced configuration of the VPN I believe where you can select or de-select to send all traffic over the VPN connection. Ultimately, that should be unchecked unless you have some very unusual need to send all your traffic over the tunnel.

                          But I would first work to get things going w/o the VPN since you are closer to success there.

                          I've seen a quirky issue a couple years ago with the way the Mac handled some internet sharing things. Devices set up to use DHCP on the ethernet side didn't always work. So I would try manually configuring the Vudu. Set the IP address up as 192.168.2.100 let's say. Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway is 192.168.2.1 and the DNS servers are 192.168.2.1.

                          See if that works. It just might. If the 192.168.2.1 IP doesn't work for the Gateway and DNS try 192.168.2.2 or 192.168.2.3 - I forget which address the Mac uses for itself in the sharing (there's no setting where you'll "see" this address). You could hook another computer up to the Mac's ethernet port in lieu of the Vudu and ping those addresses until you find the right one but it's almost certainly one of those.

                          Try that and report back. This should work and I'm curious to how it ends up for you.

                            Hi there,

                            Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to connect via a VPN because I'm out of the US for a while (in the UK) and was hoping to use a VPN to have a US IP address, so it isn't really an option for me to just connect through 'standard' internet sharing.

                            Yes, I am sharing my Airport connection to my ethernet port.

                            I can manually change the IP address on the Vudu but that makes no difference to my results.

                            If I try to change my gateway and DNS settings manually on the Vudu then the settings cannot be saved as it is unable to connect to the gateway whilst verifying the settings.

                            Would you be able to tell me anything about the port settings etc which Vudu uses to connect to it's servers so that I can check with my VPN provider that they allow those ports?

                            Or maybe I'll just have to wait to be back in the US :-(

                              Adding a 7db D-Link antenna to my router made a day & night difference for me. My signal to noise was anywhere from 3db to 10db initially, now it is 30 to 40db. I was getting dropped connections all the time, and now it never goes down. My router is in the basement of the house, and I'm on the second floor, so overall this sounds similar to your situation. I highly recommend getting a high gain antenna first, before doing more complicated solutions.
