    Dolby Atmos 5.1?

Why is it that in the technical info for my UHD with Atmos purchases does it say "Atmos 5.1"? I have a more than capable 7.2.4 Marantz reciever and I am running Vudu from a Nvidia Shield. As far as I am concerned Atmos 5.1 is just Dolby digital ++, not Atmos.

Atmos is a 3D (object based) audio format - it adapts to the number of speakers you have set up. If you don't have Atmos, it is backwards compatible with DD+ 5.1. Technically the info probably shouldn't even bother saying "5.1".

I am also having this same issue where ATMOS doesn't work, here is my current setup:

Software Version of device: Nvidia Shield 7.2.3
Vudu Client Version: 5.0.121 (Android TV)
Movie Title/Definition: Black Panther UHD HDR 4K ATMOS
      Receiver: Denon AVR-X4200W

When I view a title with 4K + ATMOS, it clearly shows 4K + ATMOS as available, but when I playback the title, ie. Black Panther, I only get Dolby Digital+. How can I fix this to make ATMOS work on my device?

      Thank you.

Atmos is not a number of speakers. It is positional audio.

On disc, Atmos metadata is layered on a TrueHD audio signal.
On stream, Atmos metadata is layered on a DD+ audio signal.

Atmos on a 5.1 base is still Atmos.

It's more about the decoder than the speakers, but yes, if you do not have a system that supports Atmos decoding it will be DD+ 5.1.

This is driving me absolutely crazy!
I'm using a Roku 4630X Premier+ connected to an Integra amp via HDMI
              Disney+ works GREAT
But VUDU always downgrades to HDX even though movie was purchased as UDX
My understanding is that on the Roku ATMOS format is a "pass through" that is interpreted by the provider (VUDU)
My download speeds are 7-9 times faster than posted minimums
              Network connections are Ethernet
Device to device connections are HDMI

TIA for any suggestions or insights...
