[Android] Unable to find license to playback content

I have been trying to watch some of my movies on the Vudu app (either casting or directly from my phone) and each time it has the spinning wheel which stops and says

"Sorry, we couldn't find the license to playback this content. Please try again later."

I have cleared the cache/data on my phone, deactivated the device from my account (T-Mobile Note 4) and reinstalled the app. Each time I get a Picture similar to the following:

Is there anything I can do?

Can you stream on other devices on the same WiFi network?

I am having the exact same message on my Samsung 12.2 tablet trying to watch a SD TV show. Works fine on my ipad mini on the same network. The android tablet is rooted. Would that affect it?

A hacked/rooted mobile device can definitely cause the DRM to fail to get a license for playback.

My device isn't hacked or rooted. Ever since I updated the Vudu app to the latest version, I've had the same problem as utahman where movies I've purchased before don't play because I can't find the license to play it. And all my previously downloaded movies in my device are all gone!!!! I also can't download them again.

          Vudu Engineering please respond.

Did you find a solution to this problem? I've been having the same problem on multiple devices. Even with movies that are downloaded to the device. It's really a pain when my daughter can't watch her Disney movies on long trips.

I have also been having the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablet (8 inch). I can't stream or download any movies using the VUDU app. On the same wifi connection however, my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone can both stream and download using the VUDU app.

I can stream via the netflix app, but can't stream videos from the google play movies and tv app (but can download and watch them however). I read somewhere it might be connection based or something via the router for the tablet, but every other device I try it works.

I'm running Android 6.0.1 and have the latest vudu app installed.

My last effort to try and fix this would be to factory restore the device and see if that helps.

If anyone can help out, that would be awesome. Thanks.

If you can't stream from Google Play either, this sounds like it may be related to Google Widevine DRM. Did the Galaxy Tab come with Android 6, or did you update it from 5? And if the latter, did it work previously?

                          Jake at VUDU....
I have the same issue as everyone else... I have spent too much money on movies NOT to be able to see them.
I have both an android and an iPad Air 2... I can not play any of my purchased movies... i chrome cast to the living room tv... this is a brand new. Chrome cast and can cast from all my other apps... this is ONLY with VUDU on both of my devices... it was working fine day before yesterday... now i cant play anything...
This is definitely a problem with the VUDU app...

Looks like we were having some issue with ChromeCast. It should be back to normal now.

Re: [Android] Unable to find license to playback content

I recently encountered the same issue on my tablet and found what I believe to be the source of the problem and how to work around it.

Here goes!! My tablet is running Android 6.0.1 and has a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. I purchased a movie in HDX (1080). The Vudu app allows me initially to stream the HDX version (or so it says) to my device, but as soon as I download the HDX version, I start getting the error (with both streaming and playing the downloaded copy) that it cannot locate the license even though the movie's main screen says, "You own HDX".

I was advised by Vudu customer support to clear the cache and reinstall the app. I did so, but got the same error. After a few more attempts at trying to identify a behavioral pattern, I figured out this sequence of steps that finally resolved the issue for me. I hope it works for everyone else experiencing this issue. It appears that the issue is NOT a license issue or the fact that we are using an app "Designed for Phones" on a tablet as was thought to perhaps be the problem, but the fact that the app is trying to play an HDX file on a device that does not support HDX resolution even though it lets you download it. My theory is that the error itself is incorrect and should say something like: "Playback resolution not supported on this device. Download SD version instead."

In any case, here are the steps that worked for me:
                              1. On your device, go to Settings / Apps and select the Vudu app.
                              2. Click on the word "Storage".
                              3. Click on the button labeled "Clear Cache".
                              4. Click on the button labeled "Clear Data". Answer "Yes" when prompted to confirm. (This allows Android OS to remove all of the settings and data associated with the app. The process did not work for me without this step so there is something happening here that does not happen when simply uninstalling the app.)
                              5. Uninstall the Vudu app.
                              6. Shutdown your device (not restart, but actually shut it down).
                              7. Start your device.
                              8. Reinstall the Vudu app.
                              9. Log into Vudu.
                              10. Download SD version of movies instead of HDX version. You still own the HDX version if that is what you originally purchased and can still play HDX on other devices that support it.

I am curious to hear if this works for others. Let me know.

                              Thanks,

                              Kevin
