Matching external HD enclosure for $28.49 AR

Amazon has the Antec MX-1 USB/e-SATA 3.5-Inch Hard Drive Enclosure on sale for $58.49 - $30.00 rebate here. Might come in handy when Vudu's external USB drive support is enabled.

As a bonus, it even looks a lot like the Vudu...

Yeah, I'm using one of those with a 1TB drive it in, and it is extremely quiet, and of course looks nice. However, I was thinking of something else for VUDU when it comes out with external storage, I'm just not sure if it will work or not, due to it uses RAID 0, but 2TB sure sounds great to me!

    LaCie Big Disk Extreme+

    FireWire 800, FireWire 400, Hi-Speed USB 2.0
    2TB

The LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ provides enormous capacity and a transparent, built-in RAID 0 array with no configuration for fast FireWire 800 speed.

On another thread a moderator said that VUDU will soon add the ability to delete purchased content off of your local drive. His understanding is that you will later be able to re-download it again for free. This would effectively mean you have unlimited storage so long as you are connected to high speed internet. There would be little need for an attached drive.

Sure, you can download it again for free once you paid for it, but that also assumes that VUDU will be successful and outlast all the others. While I truely hope they do succeed and kick ATV and Netflix's butt in the VOD market, if I'm going to invest alot of money in purchasing movies, then I want to insure that I have physical custody of those movies, in case something does go wrong. If you are willing to assume that risk and potentially lose your movies, more power to you. However, until the time comes that they are a household name and been around long enough to prove their success over the long term, I'll protect my investment.

Of course if Vudu failed, then a failure of the hard drive or the box could wipe everything out too. It's a little safer, but it wouldn't provide indefinitely guaranteed storage.

Well technically you could if you were so inclined to create a backup, although probably more trouble than it is worth, you could clone an exact copt of the external HDD to a 2nd one to back it up if you were that paranoid. After all, your not voiding the warranty on your box or unencrypting content, although it probably still violates some VUDU terms of use or something.

However, I still think they would have a hard time enforcing that as the "fair use" laws do allow people to create backup copies of purchased content legally as long as that copy is for personal use, not for profit. And as long as the encryption is not defeated.

Any copies of DVDs, even for personal use, are illegal.

Actually, that isnt true... and more of a myth the studio's would love for you to believe.

The reality is that those cases that have been brought before the court only dealt with manufacturers and sellers of products that assist DVD owners in exercising their rights, whom themselves do not possess such rights. Under the Copyright Act, legitimate owners of DVDs possess the right to make backup copies and other fair uses of their DVDs, under the law. In fact the the courts have reasoned, that although not all content on DVDs may be available in unprotected forms, it is possible to copy the content in other ways.

In fact Congress did not ban the act of circumventing the use restrictions. Instead, Congress banned only the trafficking in and marketing of devices primarily designed to circumvent the use restriction protective technologies. Congress did not prohibit the act of circumvention because it sought to preserve the fair use rights of persons who had lawfully acquired a work."

Either way, cloning an exact duplicate for personal use and archival purposes without circumventing the copy protection is legal under "fair use".

A quote in your article seems to refute what you are saying:

"However, in the current regime, the circumvention of antipiracy technology itself is an illegal act and can often trump the consumer's legal right to fair use of legally-owned material, such as making personal copies of their movies."

Actually that implies that one is circumventing [electronic locks] to get access to content. In the case of cloning, there is NO circumventing as the encrypted content is NOT being decrypted, and therefore, no violation of the antipiracy law.

They need to change the FBI warning at the beginning of every movie then.

EDIT: I see you say without circumventing the Copy protection. How can you make a copy without circumventing the copy protection? I'm talking Digital copies not analog and also not using a $30K system to watch the DVDs from a server.

Well I just closed on an Ebay auction tonight for a new VUDU.
Hopefully I'll get it in time to get the $50 in VUDU bucks for activation.
