    Vudu Questions, etc

I am trying to figure out what to get here and am about ready to pull the trigger on a Vudu box...I do have some questions however that some of you might be able to help me with. Is Vudu's software local on the box or does the box connect to Vudu as a mandatory step to run? My reason for asking is that I see all types of functionality hacks for ATV...those hacks make the box more usefull..now that doesn't mean that the Big A doesn't plug them all up, but for now they haven't and those small little tweaks are good ones. I haven't seen any of those types of things on Vudu...I know that Vudu Labs has some stuff but from what I understand all of that is controlled by Vudu...my fear is WHAT IF...Vudu goes bye bye in 5 years...that leaves me with a box that doesn't work. Being able to connect to my computer and play content from it is important to me...I have all sorts of media that I have both bought and brought in from CD's, etc so I can play them on my devices. The BIGGEST draw to the Vudu is it's content with respect to movies...the Vudu wins HANDS DOWN in that area.

I just want to know if there is a prayer of additional functionality for small hacks like ATV has right now. Hacks that add functionality such as playing any content from a network system or from other websites like Hulu

I've not heard of any "hacks" on the Vudu. On the other hand, the functionality of being able to continue to play content stored on the Vudu box without an internet connection (or even the existance of the Vudu company servers) already exists and is part of the core product.

In addition, the Vudu Labs applications are eventually going to be open to 3rd party development. So there will be additional apps people can add at some point. When this is, I do not know.

The Vudu box is a very closed system at this point in time. It functions very well and unlike the ATV as Ed pointed out, you don't need an internet connection to watch content already on the box. So if you have a bunch of movies you buy and 5 years from now, Vudu is gone, you'll still be able to watch those movies.

Actually, you do. If you have an iTunes rented movie, it checks the iTunes store for authorization before you can watch it. It may do that with purchased content as well. I've seen it check authorization before watching. Try disconnecting your ATV from your network and try watching a downloaded rental.

The Atv doesn't do that with purchases. You can watch without an internet connection.

OK. Thanks. That's still an advantage for Vudu as I can load one up with a bunch of rentals and watch them all at a later date w/o internet. I can't do that with ATV.

That's what I love. I can't count the number of times I have loaded a movie (usually HDX) to take over to a friend's house. Being able to load a movie and then watch it w/o being tethered is nice.

My wife does that when she takes trips with friends and it works out really well (until she dropped it trying to hook it up that is ).
