Ridiculous Pricing Trends on Catalogue Rentals

    Ridiculous Pricing Trends on Catalogue Rentals

    Is it me or has the rental price of most catalogue titles just snuck up from 3.99 to 4.99? This seems to be for the HDX versions only (with the lower quality 4Mbps HD rentals still at 3.99) so I would assume it's to help meet the cost of streaming this stuff but honestly, they should have either stuck with p2p or negotiated a better cut with the studios.

    This is a truly, truly bad idea for many reasons:

    - Pricing is even more complicated now, three different quality tiers, each with there own price. When some one asks me how much is a rental, and I have to send five minutes explaining the various possible answers, something is wrong.

    - The price for old movies on Vudu is now the same as new releases on AppleTV. Not a good selling point.

    - Does anyone seriously think people will pay five dollars to rent Howard the Duck?

    Well a pricing difference between HD and HDX makes more sense in the streaming world where both are available instantly. It would be ridiculous to charge the same in that case, IMO. Having them be the same does make more sense on the STB because you have to wait for one while you can get the other instantly. I would guess that having pricing differences between the streaming world and the P2P world is probably more of a bother than it's worth.

    Now, is it ridiculous? Not in my opinion. Geez, prices change all the time on almost everything in the real world. Movie prices have gone up in theaters over the time that I've owned my Vudu. If there are different tiers and each costs something different, that shouldn't be difficult for anyone to understand. In fact, it was difficult for people to understand initially when HD and HDX were the same. There were bets on this forum (with cheese being the payout) on exactly how long the identical pricing would last. So from that perspective, it seems quite reasonable.

    Now will I rent Howard the Duck for that price? Probably not. Buf if I can choose a lower price tier for that movie, I might just watch it. I would, however, spend that amount on other movies. In the end, I'll just choose the tier that's right for me based on the the movie, the service quality and the price.
