Free shoud not require a credit card number

Just got a new LG LCD TV with Vudo built in. Ran an extension ethernet cable from my router to my new tv and got connected and was looking forward to testing the Vudu service.

Imagine my surprise when Vudu requires a credit card number to get my free video rental!!!

FREE SHOULD NEVER EVER REQUIRE A CREDIT CARD NUMBER!!!!
    NEVER!!!!

I guess I'll just stick with using my Comcast HD on demand as well as the built in Netflix on my tv.

There are some real neanderthals working there in marketing at Vudo who don't understand the word "free".

    Brewmaster --

In order to activate your VUDU on your TV you will need to establish an account - which would need a valid credit card as well. Once your VUDU is activated, you will receive a free $5.99 credit to your account - the price of a HDX rental. After trying your free HDX rental you decide VUDU is not for you, you can deactivate your VUDU and close your account, refunding your initial deposit back to your credit card.

With VUDU there are no contracts or monthly fees. Our service is pay-as-you-go, so you decide when and what to spend your money on.

What's the big deal about giving a credit card number? If you don't like the service you just cancel. There is nothing abnormal about requiring a credit card.

If it's "pay-as-you-go", and I have not bought a movie yet, then you should not require a credit card. Yet, you are requiring a credit card. That would be called "pay-before-you-receive".

All I want is to test your service and get the free movie rental you told me that I could get. I will then decide if your service is worthy or not.

Actually it is a big deal. I have never seen a company advertise something as "free" yet require a credit card. It's unethical.

If a company is going to do something unethical, then how can I sincerely trust them to refund my money if I decide I don't like the service?

Free really only means it doesn't "cost" you anything, thus your net worth remains exactly the same before and after the transaction. That's certainly true here. It has nothing to do with setting up an account with a credit card, and even priming that with a deposit. After all, unless you personally keep all of your cash in your posession, someone else (presumably a bank) is holding it for you. It's still your money in the case of the bank and the case of the Vudu account set up with a credit card.

You are incorrect. VUDU is going to charge my credit card $20 in order to get my "free movie". Then, I have to go through the hassle of trying to get my $20 refunded.

When VUDU has charged me $20, it's no longer my money. It's a charge against my credit card.

To be politically correct, VUDU only puts a $20 authorization on your account, not a charge. While it may look like a $20 deposit on your bank statement we actually do not collect any funds until the $5.99 free credit has been used up entirely. Once you attempt to make a transaction after the $5.99 has been used we will then collect the $20 deposit.

In theory, you would be able to create an account with VUDU, take advantage of the free $5.99 credit, and if you don't like the service close your account, which we will then expire the $20 authorization and never actually collect the funds.

I agree with the earlier post. It sounds as if I have to put a deposit of $20.00 on my account and when that is used up, they will automatically put another $20.00 on there....don't like this idea so won't be using the free movie or Vudu, I guess......maybe I am misunderstanding????

I am 100% correct. Even though Vudu charges your credit card (or puts a hold on it as it actually seems to be), and Vudu is holding the money as a deposit, the FACT is that it is still your money, regardless of who is holding it. That's exactly what I said in my post. Yes have to make a phone call to get the money back, but that doesn't make it NOT your money.

Re: Free shoud not require a credit card number

I don't think VUDU is for anyone who is worried about a little $20 hold on their card.
The HDX rentals are $5.99. Three rentals and you're near $20. I have mine set to automatically charge $20 when it gets low and this is perfect, but if someone is worried about a tiny hold like that I really don't think the VUDU service would work well for them. It's only $20 and it's just a hold. It's not like you are losing any money because they put a $20 hold on the card. If you don't use it you don't get charged. No big deal.

Now if they only used cash then I would not touch them. I try to avoid giving any business to an establishment that only takes cash. I charge whether it's 50 cents or 50 dollars and if the merchant won't take a charge card then they don't get my business.

And if they give me some erroneous crap about a minimum charge amount, I report them to the charge card companies since the credit card companies don't allow a merchant to have a minimum or maximum charge amount.

The mechanism of using deposits is quite well established and understood. In every instance where someone keeps a deposit (Vudu included), the money still belongs to you. If, when your business with the entity holding your deposit is concluded (in the Vudu case, you could spend it on movies or get the entire deposit returned by cancelling your account), YOU get YOUR money back. Deposits are almost always used on things like apartment/house rentals and car rentals. Heck, you even have to leave one of YOUR shoes as a deposit when you rent shoes at a bowling alley. That doesn't make it NOT YOUR shoe when someone else is holding it.

Now this particular model of using deposits is a little unique but it is also in use elsewhere in the everyday world. The exact same mechanism is used by my FasTrak responder that pays MY tolls from MY money on deposit with them. When MY deposit goes to $0, they automatically charge my credit card to replenish it. This type of system works very well for these types of small transactions as it means they don't need to get a credit card authorization every time a movie is rented. This speeds up the process for you the renter of the movie.

I'm not sure why such a big deal is being made of this but if it really bugs you, then I suppose the answer is clear. Just don't use the service. Then, I suggest you never rent an apartment or car, go bowling and rent shoes, or get a time saving toll paying responder to save you driving time if you ever need to pay tolls.

Just for a little perspective (as someone earlier in the thread said that they don't know of any other companies that require CCs to redeem free offers) Netflix and Audible are 2 major online services that do this. You get free trials or free books, but have to sign up for an account to do this which requires the giving of a CC number.

I must not be affluent enough to be a VUDU user as I have gone below $20 in my bank account or gotten within $20 of my credit card limit when needed. To have an entertainment service for my own enjoyment keep that $20 hold on my account is definitely not a convenient service for me and is a deal-breaker, even in the face of the "ease-of-use" convenience (that includes troubleshooting buffering issues.)

So long VUDU - doubt if I'll even remember you in five years if you're still around.
