DNS Relay/Caching on the router with Vudu streaming

It bothered me that I could only get Vudu to work on my Samsung Bluray player by using the static IP/DNS addresses. It didn't make any sense to me why I would need to do that. So I decided to try an experiment. I saw that all of my DHCP connected machines had the automatic DNS set to the address of my router. So they were essentially using my router as the DNS server and I believe it does some sort of caching. I turned off the "Enable DNS Relay" setting on my router and I noticed that my devices now get the actual DNS servers assigned to me by my ISP. I fired up the Samsung box and let it use DHCP and it worked fine.

So I guess you really want to make sure that your router isn't being used as your DNS server and caching.

BTW, I flipped the setting back and forth several times just to make sure and it's completely reproducible.

Some caching DNS servers in routers have issues because they don't follow the time to live rules for refreshing the cache. Having your devices go round trip to your ISP DNS servers by turning the cache off resolves this issue in most cases.

If you do that, does it really make a difference? I have no idea how to do that on my router. I have a Netgear N Gigabit open source router with factory Netgear firmware. Everything I have works fine even my VUDU on my blu-ray player (LG BD590). Does my router have a cache that needs to me cleaned every so often??

I wouldn't change anything if you aren't having any problems. I was originally having problems that were completely fixed making the router configuration change.
