    HD-DVD is Dead

    It's official:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080219/...dyTuzcWlYE1vAI

"This was a very difficult decision to make ... but when we thought about the trouble we would cause to consumers and our partners, we decided it was not right for us to keep going with such a small presence," Toshiba Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida told a news conference.
Vudu is not mentioned but this paragraph was interesting:

But the Blu-ray win comes just as digital movie downloads appear on the market, rolling out movies and TV shows on high-speed Internet connections and bypassing the disc altogether. That could limit growth for Blu-ray, analysts said.

    Re: HD-DVD is Dead

I have a question. Since now Toshiba itself has stated that they will no longer support HD DVD, the studios will all be going Blu-Ray. The studios have invested or are currently investing ALOT of time and money into Blu-Ray. Will they be wanting to put as much effort into getting a working HD VOD model up and running that is equal to Blu-Ray? Will VUDU be able to rise to the occasion and eventually have an HD library equal to that of Blu-Ray?

I understand that HD DVD and Blu-Ray combined only accounted for 2% of DVD sales over the recent holiday season, but the percentage for HD VOD downloads had to be even less than that as it's JUST now coming into the market and has not yet hit mainstream. We don't see any displays in Best Buy or pretty much any storefronts for VUDU or any other VOD service. I'm really looking forward to seeing HD VOD services kick Blu-Ray right out of the market, but I think it needs to be more aggresively advertised and marketed to the common consumer.

Blu-Ray players aren't selling because they still remain above the $150 - $199 price bracket that would really catapult it into the mainstream. VUDU, Amazon Unbox, Xbox Live, Apple TV, and the rest need to beat Blu-Ray to this price range in order to not be crushed under the heavy pocketbook of Sony and other BD manufacturers.

Right now it's not about dominating your corner of the market, it's about helping your market as a whole rise up and be able to compete with physical media such as Blu-Ray and SD DVD's. The best way to do this is to compete aggresively with your competitors and they need to keep up the levels of competition by bringing manufactureing prices down, making sure rental/purchase fees are lower than SD/Blu-Ray DVD's, and mainly making sure there is a broad library of titles to choose from in full 1080p and 720p HD.

I really want to see HD VOD services, not just VUDU, but all of them come into their own and mature quickly. There NEEDS to be a clear choice in the HD market. Blu-Ray CANNOT be the only player.

I'm not an expert but I would guess that supporting only Blu-Ray instead of that and HD DVD will cost them less money, not more. Also, VOD is not really redundant in the way that the 2 physical media formats were. I would guess that it is overall better for VOD that there is only 1 physical media format. People will continue to want VOD, even with Blu-Ray and the number of them will grow. The number of people who will lament about the loss of HD DVD will shrink out of existance (like the people who still think Beta Max should have won).

Well there goes my XBox 360 HD drive....it now becomes a paper weight. Good thing I didn't pay too much for it and only have 7 HD DVD titles.

It's not a paper weight by any means. I too own a 360 add-on drive, and I plan on continueing my HD DVD collection. There are still over 400 HD DVD titles available on Amazon.com alone. I have been collecting regular SD DVD's since they came out and I only have about 350 of those. In fact, I just ordered The Planet Earth series on HD DVD from Amazon the other day. It's gonna be waiting for me when I get home from work today! I plan on ordering a few more on friday when I get paid.

You've probably seen the rumors but I think we can expect to see an add-on Blu-Ray drive for our 360's sometime this year.
