VUDU on Roku XDS
Hi Dan,
What is the possibility of getting Roku on older gen 1 models like the Roku XDS? I hope this is in the works. This would be valuable to many even if the video quality had to max out at 720p or 420p.
Thank you

I received an email advertising the VUDU service now available on Roku. I tried it and it didn't work. Every other channel has worked, so this was a first.
There wasn't any disclaimer, or notification or otherwise immediately obvious explanation as to what the problem was, so I had to google it. From the abundance of posts complaining about this issue, I wasn't alone.
As a consequence, 6 weeks later I haven't returned to the app.
While I admit I am way overdue for an audio upgrade, as a priority it hasn't been high on the list. Maybe for Xmas. But in the meantime... oh well.

So, this evening I wasted my credit on Cabin in the Woods... had some friends over to show off the Roku and the slick new Vudu App. Used the credit, did the speed test (15mb connection, no problem)... trailer works fine, but.. movie has no sound.
Spend 30 minutes rebooting, plugging, unplugging screwing around with apps and TVs and receivers and software but nothing works.
So... we went to Redbox and got the Blu Ray for $1.62... enjoyed the movie with friends in glorious 1080p with digital surround; saved over 66%. Now that friends are gone I google the problem to find it's not just me, it's WIDESPREAD.
I just don't understand how this service will be successful if it's thrice the price and not easily accessible. Good luck with that.

I love Apple, but it burns my arse that AppleTV is so self-perpetuating and will not add the Vudu app. I am actually STUNNED that it includes Netflix and Hulu. I guess Apple does not see them as a threat to its movie rentals and sales.
A "one-box" solution would have been perfect, but I can live with two -- or even three.
An online company called www.monoprice.com has some really nice and affordable HDMI switch boxes. I have one that has two HDMI inputs to one HDMI out. I may get another that has three HDMI in/one out for my office so I can switch inputs at the press of a button.
My office flatscreen only has one HDMI in so the monoprice HDMI switch box will accommodate my AppleTV and Roku (when I get it). I plan to get the $99 Roku 2 XS next week.

Re: VUDU on the Roku Player
I don't own one either, in fact I am not very familiar with the Roku devices but they sound like they were created for exactly what you are wanting to use it for.
I checked them out a few weeks back (before football season started) to see what was available on them. I was looking to see if maybe ESPN3 was on there...it wasn't. I would love to have ESPN3 available on my TV and not limited to watching on my computer!
Consider this though...if you ever replace that television with a new one then you may have access to VUDU, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, etc. at that time. So if your television is a few years old (probably not, I don't know how long Apple TV has been around) then you may want to just go ahead and invest in a new television instead. But I do understand that financially that may not be an option. But that is something that I would at least think about if I am considering spending any amount of money over $25. I would hate to buy Roku and then have to replace it with a new TV a few months later and then find that I have Roku that I don't need.

Well, I was hoping a Roku-Vudu user on this forum would recommend a Roku model to me, but no one has come forward. I will visit the Roku website to see what I can find there.

I have an AppleTV box in my office. I really want to be able view Vudu in the office, but not on the computer screen, on the wall mounted LED 1080p flatscreen. The TV does not have built in apps.
Is the Roku box my best option to add Vudu to my office TV? If so, which model is highly recommended?

Re: VUDU on the Roku Player
It's not VUDUs or Roku's fault that your didn't understand what was required. DD+ has been included on modern receivers for over 5 years...when you use one of the newer codecs (DD+, DTS-Master, etc), you either need to have your player convert and send the processed signal over the 5.1/7.1 analog outs of your player to a receiver/processor, or yes, you need a receiver that can do the decoding internally after receiving the signal via the HDMI cable. If you have an outdated receiver, then just you can still get surround sound by engaging the dolby pro-logic function.
I've been using VUDU for over two years now, and when I found out they have a Roku channel I was thrilled. I could either complain that VUDU's awesomeness isn't compatible with my 2 year old Roku box, or I can be excited and invest a mere $79 in my entertainment and pick up a Roku2 box so I can enjoy it. Guess which one I'm choosing?
Honestly, just go get a new receiver....I've seen plenty of them for under two bills that have allllll the codecs you could ever want.

Re: VUDU on the Roku Player
Just curious, what is the actual data rate of the 1080p video and how much can the Roku 2 buffer?
I have a T1 which is 1.544 MBPS, I don't think it was quite keeping up with the video but it seemed to play ok if I paused the video to let the buffer pre-fill. Haven't tried watching any whole movies yet though.
