    Closed Caption

When will Vudu include closed captioning? This is especially import for the foreign movies in Mandarin and Cantonese. Also would be nice for US movies when the characters have accents that are difficult to understand.

    Re: Closed Caption

This is an oft requested feature but it's not that easy. Closed Captioning is not likely to ever be supported as it does not function over HDMI AFAIK. Closed captioning is a signal embedded into the edges of the frame of the video signal. The TV then decodes that and prints it on the screen.

What you probably want are sub-titles. Those are still difficult with the way things are currently done. There's some other threads that discuss this.

Most of the foreign films should have subtitles on them. If you are viewing 4:3 content and have the screen set to "zoom" that content to fit a 16:9 set, some or all of those sub-titles might be cut off.

As Jon has stated that closed captioning is a technical implementation used in "Broadcast" television and no supported in component and HDMI connections. The replacement is subtitles which at this time there is no finalized specification in H.264 (MPEG-4).

The subtitles currently embedded in most foreign films are the responsibility of the content owners. Some content owners and directors do not add subtitles to preserve the "artistic" content of the movie.

And some use them in creative ways to add to the Movie. Check out Night Watch and Day Watch for good examples.

            Re: Closed Caption

Despite calling it "Closed Captioning" instead of subtitles, it's still good news for Netflix users, and maybe a sign of movement in the VOD industry: "Subtitles Now Available for Some [Netflix streaming] Titles for PC/Mac Viewing"
