    Re: Anything on Subtitles?

The only time I ever get any value from CC is when sometimes I'll watch Fox News with it on and listen to music in the background.

The only other time I can think of using CC, is watching a sports program at a sports bar where they either don't have the sound on or it's too noisy to hear. (This is usually during my therapy sessions )

I've never used CC or subtitles to watch movies and I don't care to rent foreign films with English subtitles only.

So CC and subtitles have little use for me and does not play a factor in my consumer decisions.

HD and CC are completely different. If everyone were given HD, 100% of people would find it an improvement and get value out of it. Nobody "doesn't want" HD and would turn turn it off it were just sitting there. Many may not want to pay for it but that is entirely different. With CC on the other hand, 100% of people already have it with their TV and the overwhelming majority of them never turn it on.

Again. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it. I'm just saying that it isn't accurate to say that the group of people that don't use or need CC is a "niche".

For the true hearing impaired people, don't they now have devices that will convert audio to visual text in real time?

          Re: Anything on Subtitles?

          Redwein is correct.

The facts are that captioning is going to play to a small subset of the marketplace. I've used CC on TV shows in the past, particularly late at night but now with my new TV, it doesn't support CC over component or HDMI so I can't really use it any more like I used to stuff I'd recorded on my ReplayTVs. It's nice because you get some dialog that you'd otherwise miss.

But at the same time, it would get annoying at times and I'd concentrate so much on reading each word, I'd miss the show.

The only people who really want and need CC or captioning are the hearing impaired. Let's face it, the hearing impaired are a very small market compared to what the market for Vudu is. I'm not trying to be insulting but realistic. Far more people want HD or Dolby Digital.

It isn't just a matter of the studios providing it. There's the whole technical issues behind how to stream with captioning and that it's not defined as a standard. You can't use Closed Captioning because it isn't supported over HDMI and component video. You don't want captioning on all the time unless the film is in a foreign language. Since DVD captioning is a post process work done by someone other than the studios generally, permission would have to be obtained from those content owners.

So the question is should a relatively small company like Vudu support a feature that is badly wanted and needed by maybe 10% of the potential customer base or should they focus on features wanted by 60 or 70 percent of the customer base? When it comes down to it, it's all about that.

CC was mandated on television because of things like the ADA and other legislation. The idea was that people of all stripes have a right to all have equal access to the basic local broadcast information (and this is the case for all local broadcast content - it all has to be carried by the provider). Non-broadcast cable networks do not have to provide programming with CC as far as I know. HD is being mandated for other things such as being able to obtain money from spectrum auctions. And the market place is beginning to drive HD adoption as well because once you view something in HD, you don't want to go back. The market is not driving any advancements in CC.

The bottom line again is that if you want CC, Vudu is not a product you will get that on and it may never support it.

            Re: Anything on Subtitles?

I think we are getting too deep into why/how many people need subtitles/CC and why Vudu may never get these features. I don't think OP or anyone else is going to sue Vudu for not having subtitles/CC, it's just we think it would be nice if they had it

Actually, what I am really curious to hear is Vudu's plans for "More" button. In the long run, I'd love to see these boxes (Vudu, ATV, 360) give us equivalent features as DVD/Blu-Ray, e.g. multiple audio streams (commentary), subtitles, extras, etc.

So I guess this is an argument I will never win. Going back to my second post and to quote Rusdude. I would just like to see more DVD like features.

And before you b* slap me, I know its not a DVD player. Its an instant gratification box but those features would be nice.

BTW, I received a preferred customer 15% off coupon today in the mail from Magnolia. That should tell you how much I buy there. Anyway I am now the proud owner of a brand new Vudu. Only $250. All plugged in and happily downloading the movie database.

No one is going to b* slap you or slap you period here! We can disagree about the feature set that we think should be in the box.

Don't get me wrong, I think captioning would be powerful and a good thing to have. I hope it does happen. And I hope we get more DVD like features as well as portability of content, ability to play content stored on our computers, etc. I think where we disagree is in the extent that you feel captioning is important. For your situation, I see that it is very important. For the majority of people, I don't think it is and that is where we may disagree. But that's OK. I tell you what - next feature poll we do, we'll add captioning to it and see. And I really do hope it does come because sometimes I'd like to be able to turn the volume down and read the dialog...

Congrats on getting your new Vudu and that's a great deal. I think you'll really like it.

Ok, truce... No more about CC.

So I'm heading down to Palo Alto until Thursday. Any chance my database will be updated by then? And do I still get the free Borne movies?

BTW, I'm glad to be back. I've already updated my Harmony and have the expensive IR receiver on order. I hope that will be here by Thursday as well. I'm in Oregon so ground should only take a couple of days.

Thanks again for your patience with my whining.

                    Hey Marvod,

If you're in Oregon, you're welcome to stop by and use our boat for some Salmon fishing, if you have the time.

Ive actually been in the store down there before. I don't usually get that far down the coast. I'm heading over to Manzanita in a couple of weeks for spring break with the kids. Next time I do I will make sure I stop in.

To narrow it down a little, I live in Canby, between Portland and Salem.

BTW, do you know Dale Cripps?

It should. The 1.3 version of the OS tells you your current database number and the latest one that you'll upgrade to get current if you are not. If you leave the box alone (which you will) you should be good to go for the weekend!

And yeah, you should still get the free Bourne movies. The Vudu site advertises as such.

Glad to have you back! I think you'll be surprised at how much the content has improved since December. Pretty much all the new releases are coming out on Tuesdays for purchase (rentals are typically coming 30 days after that) and Warner Brothers gives you rentals and purchases when the movies are released which is way cool.
Thanks again for your patience with my whining.
No problem. I whine plenty as well.

And we'll keep pushing for that feature you want at some point!
