    VUDU vs Movie Theatres

    I started this thread to see if there were any opinions about the state of Movies at the Theatre.

    I don't know if I'm just spoiled or just ended up at a bad movie theatre, but the last time I've to been to one was to watch the lastest SpiderMan Movie.

    I rarely go to a theatre but always reserved it as an occasion to watch a movie that had lot's of special effects (i.e. Star Wars, Spiderman, etc.) because I considered it the ultimate in a big screen viewing experience.

    But when I went to the local cinema to watch Spiderman, I was very disappointed. The movie seemed to flicker and was always slightly out of focus. And it had it's own set of artifacts. Don't know what there called, but things like wild hairs and other things that looked liked the film was overly used and dirty.

    Anyways, I was so disappointed, I haven't been back to a theatre since, and was wondering if anyone had any similiar experiences.

    We generally have positive experiences at the theaters we go to. I still enjoy it for movies that come out that we have been waiting to see.

      Actually, at my theater I have nothing bad to say, they have always been good quality films. They also have a IMAX screen which is great!

        To me, it depends greatly on the theater. Some theaters have digital projection and don't use film. Those are the best as you don't get the fuzz balls that show up in the film.

        But yeah, film in the theaters has its own artifacts.

        Generally, I find the ones around me to be staffed and managed by a bunch of high schoolers who don't seem to care. I've started to see a couple of adults around finally which is good. One not far from here started out really nice when they built it but has degraded a lot over time. Each time we go there the sound is lousy or the theater is bad or something. So it's not like it was when the opened it. There's a closer one where we pretty much go about 80% of the time and it's decent but lots of popcorn spilled all over the place. But in general their sound is pretty good and it's a decent experience.

        Given we have 2 small kids it's hard to get out so we watch most stuff at home now...Saw Michael Clayton last weekend. Hard to follow at first but comes together and ends very strong...

          Our local theater uses digital projection, which is nice, but I still rarely go to the theater. I am one of those who does not like to get disturbed during a movie, and when people bring young kids or babies to violent, loud movies, it just reminds me why I never go anymore.

            There can be distractions and disturbances when watching it at home too. Since the movie can be paused, things like someone answering the phone or going to the bathroom, or even outright talking seem to be more likely to occur at home than at the theater. Look at the number of people who complain about the 24 hour rental window. They are obviously not watching the movie in one sitting. It seems to me that when we watch movies at home, my own family treats it more like watching a TV show than they do watching a movie at the theater.

              Digital projections or not, I get so distracted now by talking and cell phones that I would rather watch them at home. TVs these days and digital audio is so advanced that it makes the experience at home pretty good. Not to mention it is a few dollars versus many more and the popcorn at home is ten times better than the stale stuff with mystery "flavoring" on top.

              I one thing that movies have over home is that you are a caputure audience. At home I have other distractions. The ability to pause the movie actually adds to the distractions. Now, this wouldn't be as much of an issue if Vudu and the movie giants would agree on a longer rental period :-)

                  I used to have a movie theater (AMC) across the street and went there pretty often due sheer convenience factor. But it closed recently since it was "only" 16 screens, didn't have very modern technology and couldn't compete with 30-screen multiplexes.

                  So I find myself going to movies less and less even though there are a few places 15-20 minutes away. I find DVDs and Vudu to be a suitable replacement and the whole experience ends up being a lot less expensive and lacking distractions.

                  Anyhow, when we look at Vudu vs Theaters in general, what a lot of AV enthusiasts would die to see is simultaneous release. Theater owners would hate this idea, but more than a few people will pay a premium (say, $50) to watch a movie on their home set-up at the same time it comes out in theaters.

                  P.S. The worst movie watching experience I had was at midnight screening of SW Episode 2. There was no surround sound at all! It's a nice theater, but that time something went horribly wrong

                    For most movies simultaneous release would be cool. However, for a really big epic like LOTR, you just gotta go to the theater. It's cool at home but to watch the battles between the elves and orcs on the really big screen is just something that can't be beat...

                    Most movies don't have the grandeur or the scope of movie to make going to the theater worth it...

                      Maybe someone should start a theatre rating service so you know what kind of quality you will get in advance for your money. Some of the multiplexes I've been to have 1 or 2 "big" screens and the rest of them were tiny suckers. So I still have to ask "is it on the your big screen"? Very frustrating.

                        Here in LA the Arclight Theaters are a bit pricey ($13.50) but they strive for quality picture, sound, and have employees who actually pay attention to them (I missed the first 10 minutes of "3:10 To Yuma" at one theater because I was trying to find a manager to turn up the sound). It doesn't weed out all the idiots, but you do get fewer people on the phone or text messaging. And they have adult-only screenings - which allow alcohol from the bar/restaurant. Add in regular screenings of classic films, special events including filmmakers as speakers, and it's pretty cool.

                        Interesting also is the reserved seating: you can show up 5 minutes before it starts and have your seat waiting for you. And it seems to have an odd side-effect that teens are frustrated that they can't just all sit next to each other unless they plan ahead.

                        I'm not sure I actually said "lousy teens" in this message, though it sounds like it. I'll be the first to admit adults are just as regularly the culprit. I had a guy sitting behind me in a theater once take two phone calls and sneak out into the hallway to smoke a cigarette. Not one employee was around and he didn't give a darn what I said.

                          Wow movie and meds instead of dinner and a movie sounds pretty good to me.

                          The cab fare from San Diego to LA would be a killer though.

                          Maybe you could PM me the location of the theatre. We could possibly stop by on our summer migration to Oregon. Hopefully not too far from I-5

                            True, my company went to watch "300" on an IMAX screen and it was very cool. The movie was cheesy but the action was spectacular.

                              Anyhow, that's not what my post was about.

                              I agree that they need to tell you which screen the movie is playing on. Yes, most, if not all multiplexes have a couple big screens and many very small screens. Still, I've had very enjoyable Dolby or the Sony equivalent (SDDS??) in a number of small theaters. Usually by the time the big movies get to those screens in the multiplex, the crowds are gone and so you have maybe 10 people in the whole theater watching. That's kind of our trick.

                              There's also a new movie theater concept starting up and they have one here near O'Hare airport. It's called Muvico (www.muvico.com). It's literally a restaurant where you have dinner and after watch a movie. They have a VIP program for $3 more per ticket per person. Gives you an over 21 area with special seating and bar, etc.

                              Their website kinda sucks but the concept looks really cool....

                              Anyone been to one? Most of their screens in in the Land of the Brain (Florida).
