Forced 1080P24

Is forced 1080P24 still going to show up in a future release? My main VUDU still only shows options to 1080i even though every device in the video chain is capable of 1080P24. So a forced 1080P24 would override this for me.

It should be in release 1.3. It's in advanced video set up or something like that. You can have the options to display all possible resolutions. Then you can choose which one you want to force.

I looked for this option twice already but couldn't find it under video options.

So I went back just now and looked again. Much to my surprise I finally found it under Advanced Settings and HDMI Options.

If you set the HDMI option to force all resolutions instead of resolutions reported by your device, you can then go back to the video settings and then all resolutions now show up.

So I tried setting mine from 1080i to 1080p and my screen went blank and smoke came out of my TV.

Just kidding... My TV actually displayed an error message saying the HDMI signal is incompatible with the TV. Then my screen went blank. In order to get it to work again, I had to hit the up arrow on the remote, and then it went back to 1080i.

But if I had panicked instead of hitting the up arrow, I'm not really sure how I would have been able to recover to normal viewing mode.

You have to acknowledge the new video mode. So if you don't get output on your TV with the new setting then you just have to wait a few seconds and you picture should come back...

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know.

I'm really disappointed in my Aquos though, I originally purchased it because they advertised it as full 1080p compatible.

Back then I barely understood what 1080p meant, let alone all the nuances of 1080/24p and 1080/60p. Sigh.... Live and Learn.

SO is the output exactly 1080P24 or is it 1080P23.976?
I just need to know whether my Video processor should output 60hz exactly or 59.94hz.

I was wondering if Vudu has planned a software update to allow 1080p60. I too have a television in the family room that won't except 1080p24 and while it has a top notch deinterlacer in it, it would be nice to be able to have the 1080p option.

If it has a top notch deinterlacer then you might not need 1080P60 becasue it might do a better job deinterlacing 1080i to 1080P60 than the VUDU box converting 1080P24 to 1080P60.
Personally I can see no difference when running 1080i or 1080P24 through my VP50pro or straight to the TV. The final result looks the same. One TV displays 1080P60 and the other displays 1080P120.

Yeah I do not see a difference when watching my movies at 1080p and 1080i on the tv through the PS3.

The television performs inverse telecine very well so 1080p24 is not a selling point for me and I am just as happy with 1080i. But as Vudu becomes more and more prevalent on the VOD market it would help to be less confusing to the average consumer to be able to do 1080p60.

People just see 1080p and then get something home only to find out the TV the bought last year won't play 1080p. When they ask about why their 1080p tv won't play 1080p movies is when they find out that the product is 1080p24 not 1080p60. When you tell them to use 1080i as the setting they may get a little ticked. They may wonder why they listened to the Best Buy sales person who sold them a 32in 1080p tv and told them 720p wasn't High Def.

1080i/30 is equal to two interlaced screens which means that if it does 30 sets of interlacing per second, there are 60 total screens.

1080p/60 is a single progressive screen 60 times a second. So, that's 60 total screens.

There should be no loss of quality with the TV converting the images. You aren't changing the resolution.

Vudu hardware does not support 1080p/60 AFAIK. And since a 1080p/60 set should display a 1080i/30 signal with no loss of quality, there's no reason for it. The real jump in quality comes when you do the 1080p/24 with something like a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Thanks for the answers. I did not know it was a hardware issue. I was just trying to save the headache that some customers would have not knowing the difference between 1080p24 and 1080p60. If a tv can do inverse telecine then this is not an issue. but most people are not aware of this.
