    HDX Bandwidth Streaming Estimation

Here is the situation. My HSI sucks, so I cannot get HDX really on my Oppo 93. Im looking hard at Verizon 4G LTE service for the home (MiFi), because I should be able to hit full HDX with their speed.

Problem, bandwidth cap. Now, keep in mind that Im spending $50 a month right now for DSL, plus $35 a week for Blu-rays (buy two per week off Amazon), so overages on the data plan are not a huge thing. I just need an idea of what a 2 hour full bar HDX movie would suck down, if anyone knows. This will allow me to guesstimate my total usage and cost for the month.

Im guessing a used BX100 is only the way to download movies still?? I really wish they would left this option open... Then you do not get the better audio.

    The maximum bitrate for HDX is about 9Mbps = 1.125MB/s. So a 2 hour movie would be: 7200s * 1.125MB/s = 8100MB ie. 8.1GB.

And the LG BD590 and LG BD690 also allow downloading movies. I'm not sure about any other platforms - it requires a HDD, of course, and not many BD players or TVs have one...

Neat, looks like the 690 just came out early this year, and the 590 is last years model. I did not even know LG had a HDD model, more brands should be doing this.

      That might be my ticket.

So the LG player needs to be on to download hdx files. Does it have to be left in the vudu app?

Yes, you need to leave it in the VUDU app.

Thanks, that's how I left it. In the vudu downloads screen and powered everything else off. Downloading black death hdx for tonight.

Cool! I did not know I would get dd+ on downloads too. Never got that on the bx100.

Actually, we don't do anything different with the audio encoding for a given quality level - we may have started encoding more content in DD+ and/or HDX quality since you last noticed, though

Iirc, what it was is, the bx100 could not do dd+, which is why you only got standard dd.

Ah, you're right - the BX100 is from the days of HDMI 1.1 so it can't bitstream DD+ - it downconverts the DD+ source to DD on output. Seems so long ago, I almost forgot

The BX100 only has HDMI 1.1. You need HDMI 1.3 to be able to transmit the advanced codecs, which includes DD+.

I still have three of the BX100 boxes. I have not used them in a long time. Two of them are still plugged in with the hard drive spinning away. The third one is still sitting in my carrying case made for the BX100 with the VUDU logo on it. I got a lot of use out of it years ago.

Hey, I still have an original box at home with the gray plastic prototype case - some of the beta users may remember that one... I'm almost surprised it's still going after 4 1/2 years of continuous use and abuse! Though the one I had with the double digit device ID in the clear acrylic hand-made "case" is now my monitor stand

Have to say after finishing the PS3 port I treated myself to one - it's hard to beat the performance on a high end game console... But we do make an effort to keep the BX100 performance as high as we can (and offer all new UI features on it, unlike some streaming services do with their almost-abandoned platforms), and not just because we still have a fair number of employees still using them
