ATV Customer .. Fed up just ordered Vudu

Sigh .. Apple hooked me on the 'sit down and watch whatever whenever' concept. I bought the ATV in Feb based on the comments of 1000/100 and rapidly expanding content. I am so dissapointed to have to shell out another $300 now because Apple failed to deliver on content.

Happy to be a new Vudu customer and I suppose I have the best of both worlds now. Lets hope I get it tommorow as promised !

    Riekl,

Welcome to Vudu! Yes, you will have the best of both worlds. Several of us here (myself included) have both Vudu and ATV. I find Vudu to be superior to ATV for movie content and user experience. I use the ATV for music, podcasts and sometimes TV shows not available yet on Vudu.

I'm sure you'll be happy. And you'll be one of the first to try out the new instant catalog update with software version 1.4. Please let us know how your out of box experience goes. We've done a lot of testing with this feature and hopefully, it will make your first couple days with the box really great.

      Welcome to VUDU land.

I have both ATV and VUDU and I don't think you'll be disappointed in your decision.

Even if it turns out otherwise, just look at it this way. The government is returning some of your hard earned tax dollars for you to buy this box and stimulate the economy. Thanks for your contribution and support for this great nation of ours!!!

Who knows, after getting your box you may even be able to help stimulate this forum too!!

Put the remote down for about 1 hour and see if your software is updated to 1.4 - also post your system id (looks like 0x12ab) when you come back to report your results.

Also .. it is Database Version 14:1366 no longer says updating catalog, and the bandwidth used is 0/0 (but i am green light).

Its about 9am PST I suppose I can call in now.

I wonder if the 1.4 improvements really only work for boxes that are shipped with 1.4. That would make sense since some important new functionality happens during the guided setup. If you do the guided setup under 1.3 and then got upgraded to 1.4, it wouldn't do the same thing as if you did the guided setup under 1.4.

I dont see why an 'update catalog' button can't be added to just pull in the metadata at any time you want. I realize you need to leave the box connected but theres no harm in adding this button especially since the code (should) now exist.

I think the real goal is that you would never, under any circumstances, need to push that button. If that is the case, then adding it would be a mistake. I understand that it would be useful to you now but that is most likely only a short term phenomenon.

Well wonderful .. I bought the box partially under the assumption I would be able to use it today because of this update.

I just confirmed with 'John' in tech support that this 'feature' wont be 'live' until next week when 1.4.0 gets pushed in guided setup right now GS is still 1.3.1

So .. er .. not a great initial Vudu experience here so far

That is correct. There are ways to force an upgrade to 1.4 even if the manufacturing process stuck 1.3 in it, during Guided Setup, so that the whole process can take place.
But since we've just rolled out 1.4, we haven't set up the servers to force-update older versions to 1.4 yet. I suspect that's going to be done pretty soon though.
Riekl may be one of the last ones to go through a 1.3 Guided Setup .

Anyway, welcome Riekl - as others have mentioned, your box will update in the background when idle. It shouldn't take more than a couple of days, but you can still use your box even if the DB is slightly out of date!

                            Cheers,

Please don't be discouraged by this: the box is very usable as you have it, and now that you've upgraded to 1.4, you can even play what we call "headless movies" (which you wouldn't be able to do with 1.3), so your box is likely to let you purchase the same movies as anybody else pretty darn quickly (way faster than the 2 day delay we used to quote for prior releases). The only difference is that they may end up showing a 30s to a minute delay before you'll be able to Watch them.

What I'm trying to say is: your box isn't "disabled" in any way - feel free to use it!

                              Cheers,
