    VUDU SUBSCRIPTION PLAN

    Here is an idea for everyone. The more people who answer this question yes the better the chance vudu might implement it. How many people would like to see a vudu subscription plan. By this I mean a plan where you pay vudu a monthly fee and be able to watch all the movies you want. I think this would be a great plan. Vudu could still keep the pay as you go plan for those folks who like that but I am one that would rather pay a little more on a monthly basis if it means that I could watch anything and everything I wanted. Please respond to this with your thoughts and lets let vudu know that we would like a choice a subscription plan in addition to the pay as you go plan.

      One thing that Netflix depends on with their "All you can consume" plan is USPS delivery times. Using a 1 day deliver and 2 day return model and 3 rentals per 2 days and 24 delivery days equals about 24 movies a month at 16.99 if you watched all 3 the day your received them.

      Now on the VUDU side since delivery is based on the bandwidth of the internet connection but also the bandwidth is constrained to what would be needed to stream the video real time 2 mbps SD and 4 mbps HD. There are 30 viewing days per month. There are no delivery delays. 24 hours per day and a average of 1.5 hours per movie. That equals about
      480 movies per month.

      So the question of what a subscription is worth when you have a service that can deliver 2000% more entertainment content in the same time period is interesting.

        The plan couldn't be unlimited. It would need to be a price that basically gives you a disount over what you would actually pay. Like $30 would get you a certain number of titles per month to watch, but it couldn't be unlimited.

          Oh I was just having some fun with this. If you did do the comparison it would about 340 dollars a month to get unlimited movies using the Netflix pricing model with the VUDU delivery model.

            You did a way better job of describing what I was thinking than I could.

            Even though Netflix claims unlimited movies per month. It's only for so many at one time. So after taking into account the latency factor inherent in their delivery system, it's just not possible to really get unlimited movie content.

            So for VUDU to follow a similar business model the subscription rate would have to be based on only so many movies allowed per week or per month for the price. I could see a subscription rate where by paying for a block number of movies you get basically discounts for quantity purchases.

            I always really encourage people to just take a look at all the existing models that are already out there that have both worked and have failed, before trying to "re-invent" the wheel.

            Otherwise no one would win.

              Everyone brings up a valid point. I currently subscribe to netflix but here is the thing. Netflix is currently building a huge instant view library. They one day hope to have every movie available in their instant view library. They have about at last count 8,000 movies that you can watch on your computer over the internet. They offer unlimited access to it to anyone that subscribes to people who subscribe to their services. Granted if they can offer instant watch unlimited there is no reason why vudu couldn't do the same. I am sure netflix took bandwidth and everything into consideration when they started offering unlimited instant viewing. Now having said this I would like everyones thoughts on this The music industry adopted the subscription model look at services like napster or rhapsody. You pay these services a monthly fee and you listen to just about any kind of music you want. I am sure thee is a way for subscription service to work with movies as well. Granted it may not be as cheap as what the music service subscriptions are but I have to believe there is a way to do it where the consumer gets to watch what they want and the company makes money.

                Some points:

                1.) Netflix makes most of their money by traditional DVD rentals. Those DVDs have a specific licensing structure associated with them that is somewhat different from online rentals. For an online rental, we are quite certain that any provider has to give the studio some money for each rental. Netflix must be basically subsidizing their online service with the money made on traditional rentals. Vudu has no such traditional service. And I don't think Netflix's online service works all that well or has the quality a service like Vudu has - at least not yet.

                2.) Even though Rhapsody and Napster offer subscription based services, there are differences. First of all, they are both struggling to survive. iTunes has about 70% of the share of online music sales and it is PURCHASE only. So that kinda kills the "subscription is the best way" idea.

                So back to Ed's original question: What do YOU want to pay for this "unlimited" service and what do you want to get out of it?

                  Er .. they do NOT allow unlimited access to the library. At least not unless things have changed drastically recently.

                  They give you 1 hour/$1/month you spend. So if you are on the $15.99/month plan you get 15 hours of access to the online library.

                    I haven't looked in awhile so maybe it's changed since then. But I found Netflix instant view to be worthless for my needs. The titles are only 4:3 SD/Stereo quality that can only be watched on your computer. They are also only library titles but no mainstream stuff. I've got so many free view hours racked up, I'd be glad to give them to you, if I could.

                    I read several times that they are planning on working with LG to integrate this service into their tv's. But you're never going to get me to buy an LG tv (or any other brand for that matter) just to be able to watch Netflix movies in SD/Stereo.

                    So unless they build, license, or invest in a STB like VUDU or ATV, I see a long row for Netflix to hoe. They sat on their laurels too long to be viable in this space, unless they jump in like an 800lb gorilla. But so far I don't that happening.

                    As far as the music goes, you got me there. I use Napster all the time but only for Oldie Moldy Rock, Jazz, and Blues. So I don't know what kind "new" stuff is actually available from those services. To this day I still can't get one title from the Beatles or AC/DC without buying it.

                      I know back in 2000 when I was on short term disabilty for 3.5 months, I was able to rent between 45 and 60 movies every month. I had been with Netflix for 2 years at the time and I had alot of time to watch since I was home every day. I didn't have HD yet. But that was with the max plan at the time. Not sure what it was but turnaround time was only 2 days. I'd stick it in the mail and get a replacement two days later.

                        You must be close to a Netflix distribution center. My father-in-law lives in the middle of nowhere MI and it takes 3 to 4 days to get a new disc after he sends one back. He used to have the max plan but know just has the 2 disc plan due to this time lag. Please don't quote me on the numbers in my post they just some quick math I put together from what I know about Netflix from his experiance.

                          The amount charged for a subscription plan would have to be determined by vudu. I am not greedy or unreasonable. I want to see a plan where by vudu would charge enough to make money they are a business and they provide this service so they have to make money. I don't have a problem with that. The rumor is that Netflix is looking into digital distribution. They sent out surveys to their customers asking them if they would be interested in accessing netflix movies via a set top box or xbox 360 or sony playstation 3. This would indicate to me that they are aggresively planning to offer some kind of subscription plan that would allow viewing of movies on your TV without the use of discs just like what vudu does. I think that somewhere in the neighborhood of say $20-30 dollars a month would be reasonable. All I am saying is that I am for vudu coming up with a plan that makes them money and lets us watch lots of movies. If they offer packages say certain numbers of movies a month for a certain price that's fine to. I just want to see a plan that gives me the consumer what I want lots of movies on a non pay per view basis while at the same time providing vudu with what they want money profit. If both of these can be accomplished then everyone can be happy.

                            Your claim about unlimited viewing of the library has been contradicted. Do you care to adjust your original claim, or dispute the point?

                              Well that's an "excellent" point. I forgot all about that. Thanks for mentioning it.

                              That could be another model to do like cell phones do. i.e. pay a monthly charge for so many minutes of video time that could be rolled over if not used.

                              VUDU could even come up with a friends and family plan too!!! Then we could be friends.
