Hmmm... that seems to indicate NP complex issues, like traveling salesman.
But somehow the problem you described doesn't seem NP to me.

Bingo!!!! You win the cupie doll and the stuffed teddy bear!!!

If you go to Wikipedia you'll find that it's exactly the same problem.

The only difference is that instead of the salesman travelling to a multitude of cities with a cost attached to each trip, the salesman is travelling from node to node on all possible routes to his destination with a cost (in speed and distance) for each node he drives to.

Good Job Greg!! Maybe you can now try for the bonus points.

(BTW It's a very great excercise in the use of recursion. Do it yourself just for fun!!)

Isn't the traveling salesman the statement of a problem, not the name of an algorithm for its solution? In fact, I believe that Dijkstra's algorithm can be used in the traveling salesman problem.

That's what threw me. Hodge said my earlier answer was wrong because it wasn't the name of an algorithm and my first guess, which was the name of an algorithm that can be used for the traveling salesman problem was also rejected.

Yea, I knew you would nail me with that!!

All I really remember 15 years ago, I was looking for a way to solve my problem. When I first wrote Traffic Assist, I couldn't get my own alogrithm to determine the optimal route in under 2 minutes. The route permutations quickly rose from hundreds to thousands of possibilities. Some of the possible routes would run around in circles and some would go all the way around the destination and sneak up to it from behind.

So I desperately looked around and found this algorithm documented somewhere called the Drunken Sailor and it was derived from the Traveling Salesman.

So I just assumed the Traveling Salesman was an alogrithm too. But your'e right after I looked it up today, I found that it's actually a decription of the problem, and not the actual algorithm itself that I had found. But I gave Greg credit for it anyways because that is the problem the algorithm does solve.

I'm glad I found it, my bacon was on the line and I couldn't get the processing time down to an acceptable level. I almost walked away from the job at first. But that algorithm with the use of recursion, saved my bacon and my contract with Traffic Assist.

But your observation is a good one and correct.

Here's an interesting link to look at: http://www.ul.ie/elements/Issue3/healy.html

I've had VUDU for over 5 months now. And during that time I've spent a lot of energy trying to milk information from VUDU on how it technically works.

Here is a portrayal of the battle I've had to get the info I've obtained to date.

                    Redwein,

I'm very sorry I didn't give you credit for that. I was looking for the travelling salesman, and didn't recognize your answer.

So I'm happy to give you co-credit with Greg for coming up with the correct answer. And you get extra bonus points for me not being able to recognize it.
