Read the article again. It is clear that the article is referring to rentals.

The big news of the day was not about one studio renting same day but purchases same day.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc said on Thursday it would begin selling movie downloads on its iTunes service on the same day as the titles are released in DVD form, under agreements with most of the top Hollywood studios.
      And from Apple's own website:
      http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/05/01itunes.html
CUPERTINO, California?May 1, 2008?Apple? today announced that new movie releases from major film studios and premier independent studios are available for purchase on the iTunes? Store (www.itunes.com) on the same day as their DVD release. New releases and catalog titles will be available from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios. Movies purchased from iTunes can be viewed on an iPod? with video, iPhone?, Mac? or PC or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV?, with new releases priced at $14.99 and most catalog titles at $9.99.
Looking at the blog some more I see this:

WARNER BROTHERs is now allowing you to rent on ATV the same day as DVD release.

Warner Brothers movies have been rentable for the same day on Vudu for several months now. I've tried to post this every time someone raises the issue. This first started back in January or February. Here's a quote from the blog:
Warner Brothers has been experimenting with the new approach for the last few months.
      Yeah, guess which platform? VUDU!

How many times have you gone to see a movie and didn't like it? No different than buying one and not liking it only it didn't cost as much. And, I don't know about anybody else but when we go to the movies all the goodies at the "Snack Bar" far exceed the cost of admission !!

I, like everyone else, have no desire to own a DVD except for the really good ones like "Lord of the Rings", "Indiana Jones" and a couple others. I really subscribed to VUDU for the rental and I couldn't see buying an ATV with all the other junk they have on it that I don't want.
$10 for two tickets before 12PM here. $14 for two tickets from 12PM to 4PM. $19 for two tickets after 4PM.

We only go to the cheaper shows. Not worth it in the evening and night wih the crowds plus the higher prices.

If you can watch it on iPod or PC then I'm willing to bet that the quality of the movies will all be SD/Stereo quality.

It's well documented you can only get from iTunes HD Movies that can only be viewed on ATV.

I don't buy movies, but if I did, I wouldn't drop a dime on movies available with "low" level of quality.

Looks like Apple is losing money on every movie sold. I told you guys they could do this as their main interest is in selling hardware:

            http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker...ader-for-Apple
Tunes' big studio deal announced yesterday? It's going to be an expensive one for Steve Jobs who's taking a loss on each film sold. Some terms from the WSJ: Apple (APPL) is paying $16 to the studios for each new release, and will sell the films to consumers for $14.99.

Well I've been an Apple Fanboy forever and even I went for Vudu over AppleTV when I compared the two. I do tend to use the Vudu mainly for rentals and for movies I'd like to own, I still prefer to buy the DVD on sale at Best Buy, Circuit City etc.

I do worry though that a company like Vudu will be pushed out by one of the 800 lb. Gorillas like Apple, Amazon, Walmart etc.

I'm taking bets on either a VUDU buyout or partnership with one or more of the following: Amazon, Walmart, Blockbuster, Netflix. They all can deliver content, but they have no where to deliver it to.

Why the hell would they sell it for a loss? You would think they would, at the very least, sell it at cost.

The apple discount is a real deal, in many other companies companies create a loss leader to try to get you into the store and sell you other stuff. A dollar loss, to create a foothold/potential future buyer of apple pc's or ipod is nothing. It is a great marketing move on apples part.

To the guy who only goes to the movies for the early show, you must be 90 yrs old.

The Only thing that is sad, is that apple as great as it is, still doesn't do file sharing or the HD/digital sound. So this is the area that vudu has going for it.

However, the rental part is clearly lacking at vudu. NEEDS to IMPROVE

How? Vudu has the same movies to rent as iTunes. Vudu gets movies to rent 30 days after DVD release for all majors but Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers and the indie studios release rentals same day as the DVDs...

Where is Vudu falling short compared to everyone else in rentals?

A little less than half that. I have no desire to go to the theater when it's crowded when more people are there that have no idea how to act. People put their feet up on the seats in front of them, they keep kicking the seats, they keep using their cellphones for conversation and texting. It's very annoying and I see people of all ages that have no idea how to behave in the theater. It's so much worse than in the 70' s, even from just 10 years ago. My girlfriend and I used to see 50 to 60 movies a year at the theater, now we're lucky to see 20, because of how the people act in the theater. And this is the case in theaters we've been to in other states as well as the DC area. I really don't understand why people don't know how to act anymore.

That' s mainly why we always go to the matinee, and the lower price makes it even better.

I know exactly how you feel. I went to see Iron Man last night and the guy and girl in the row behind me wouldn't stop talking. She had the nerve to call me rude?

Someone does that to me, I'll report them to the theater manager and have them kicked out...

I'm not sure how Vudu is supposed to improve rentals (aside from more content), but I agree with the first part of the statement. If you read the full article it says that Wal-Mart is paying $17 per DVD and uses them as loss leader to get people into the stores. It's similar to gaming console manufacturers taking a loss (at least for the first few years) on consoles but raking in the $$$ on the software sales.

P.S. I agree on movies. I don't go to movies as often partly because of that. Plus, with a decent set-up, you aren't really losing much by viewing at home unless it's some blockbuster ("300" on IMAX was fun).
