Why is PC streaming limited to SD

Is there a real reason why PC streaming is limited to SD? Both my laptop and desktop have 1080p screens, and I commonly use them hooked over HDMI to my receiver & TV. Why do I need to pay $150+ on an external box just to get 1080p & 7.1 sound?

Is this purely an irrational fear of pirating? It'll get out on the net sooner rather than later anyway.

The funny thing is, the studios making these kind of asinine restrictions on people who actually want to pay for their content, make the pirate route a more attractive option than the legitimate source.

Very much so. Not that I've ever gotten videos (tv, move, etc) from an unauthorized source. But those sources seem like they are much easier to use & more flexible in terms of where/when I could watch them.

You remind me of my kids. Here's your answer: "Because they said so!!!"

It really doesn't matter why. You know the terms. You may not like them, but what difference would it make to you if you knew why? You can't change it. It's vudu's and the studio's decision.

            Ummm...ok...

So back to the legit question of why PC is limited to SD... is it really piracy that is the concern? Or is it just them trying to push the sales of set-top boxes?

Vudu doesn't make STBs any longer, they just license their software. The studios are paranoid about not just piracy, but control in general.

I doubt piracy has anything to do with it. I bet it's because the vast majority of people watching on their computers are watching on monitors too small or too cheap to see a difference between SD and HDX. Why should Vudu dedicate all that bandwidth to a bunch of people who couldn't see a difference anyway? Speculation, sure. I don't see where Vudu answered you, though. Now, armed with that knowledge, change Vudu's mind.

+1!!!!, I think it's great people want to view movies on different devices.....That said, I have a hard time watching films on a small screen with small sound, takes the impact of the film away.....Watching Avatar on a cell phone screen or PC? Won't happen in my house....

What difference does it make whether the bandwidth is used for a PC or one of the streaming devices?

And even on an old 19 inch monitor it's pretty easy to see the difference between SD and HD.

Hey, your beef is with Vudu, not me. Like I said earlier, this thread reminds me of a 5 year old asking his mommy "Why," when she just said "No." Does it really matter why Vudu won't allow you to stream HDX to your PC? Even if Vudu explained it, what would you do with the answer?
