    Downloading

New VUDU customer, hooked my box up and it's been sucking bandwidth for 2 hours now. Does this ever stop?

How much bandwidth is it "sucking up"? My guess is somewhere around 500K or so.

The box is updating its database. New database updates are sent out on Thursday/Friday/Sat or so. This contains next weeks new releases, etc. Plus as a new user, you probably experienced the "instant update" feature. This new feature pulls down all the movie files but the artwork, previews, and posters for all the movies takes a while and will be coming down over the next couple of days.

So the box is going to use bandwidth on and off. It will use some of the next 2 or 3 days.

Is it a problem? If you have enough bandwidth to stream in HD or even SD, you won't notice the box's affect on your network at all.

Welcome to the board. Can you clarify what 'sucking bandwidth' is?

When a new VUDU is setup and depending on the software version the catalog is either updated during the setup process and then the additional content "Movie Posters", is downloaded in the back ground, or the entire catalog is updated in the background which takes about 36 hours to update.

The VUDU is always "connected" and receiving updates. The updates are designed to have a minimal impact on your network.

Ok "sucking" isnt the right term. I have plenty of BW. It's just been running since 10 PM last night (16hrs). Today I notice it's all uploading not downloading. I haven't rented any movies so I'm not sure what's uploading. I just wanted to make sure this thing will eventually stop running non stop as it's been.

The box uses network traffic for a variety of reasons. Since you pulled the most recent database update, your box may be helping to seed others the new database. So your upload traffic will come and go as the box needs it. It won't generally take more than 300 kbps upload traffic at max. Generally it will be around 100k or so. How much does it use the network? A fair amount. I would say that there's probably something going on between 40 and 50 percent of the time - receiving a movie, receiving the database, seeding others with the database or sending chunks of a movie to someone.

It's quite unobtrusive. Just let it sit there and play and all will be happy!

BTW: WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF VUDU!

How exactly does one tell how much bandwidth one's vudu is sucking?

The moderators know better than I do.

But I stumbled across a screen the other day in the VUDU settings in Bandwidth Options that appears to show the realtime upload and download bandwidth being used by VUDU.

Also since it uploads "and" downloads, I think it might actually being spitting and sucking bandwidth, not just sucking.

Correct. This was an added feature in 1.4.

Also, if you have a router that is SNMP compliant, you can get a program like PRTG (www.paessler.com) that will graph your traffic. Below is mine live.

The green is my outbound traffic. I generally know what's going on on my network be it ReplayTV, Mozy or if all else fails Vudu. I usually know what's doing what..

Mine is sucking and spitting. Has been since Friday night. One thing I notice, when downloading, the activity stops when I power up the unit, but when uploading the activity continues and I can see it on the bandwidth screen.

When reading you post I thought I read that the activy stops when you power off the unit. I was going to post "HUH?".

You post is a bit confusing. But the VUDU will download and upload data when the catalog is updating. Every two or three days I see additional uploads going on but it usually doesn't last more than a few hours.

Actually, what is happening is you are downloading the database. Downloading the database is probably the lowest priority. So as soon as you start to do anything with the UI on the box, the downloading of the database stops. Uploading will continue as your box is seeding the network.

After you stop using the UI or the box for a few minutes, the download activity will resume.

                      This is all 100% normal.

This is a network based device. It is going to sit there and be active from time to time on your network.

That explains it. I was curious as to why it stopped downloading on power up. I have a great network, 20K down 3K up so VUDU isn't causing me any slowdown at all. Here's hoping for more HD.

Do you really mean 20M?? I flunked a math test once because I got the right number but got the decimal in the wrong place.

One has to ponder this statement.

For purposes of discussion lets use >=70% as "passing" and <=69% as failing (flunked in the vernacular of the OP). Your schools actual grading scale may vary.

Scenario 1 - There were only 3 questions on this math test, so getting one wrong answer resulted in 66% score (same thing is true if there were only 2 or 1 questions on the test).

Scenario 2 - There were many more questions, however the decimal place error was consistantly applied by the OP.

Scenario 3 - There were 100 questions on the test, and the OP had already gotten the wrong answer on 30 other not decimal point questions, with the misplaced decimal point being the 31st question answered incorrectly.

Scenario 4 - The test was self graded and his actual score was a 72%, however due to the misplaced decimal he gave himself a 7.2% in the gradebook.

Play at home time! Can you think of any other ways for Robert to flunk a math test due to a misplaced decimal point?
