    bandwidth test

    Howdy All,
The Vudu speed test (both in the device and on this website) run WAAAAAY slower than any other bandwidth speed tests I've tried. Is this intentional or is there something wrong with the Vudu tests or, like, is the server on the moon or something?

On other site tests (speakeasy.net being the most common one I used) I get between 14meg (when testing to LA which is across country from me) and 24meg (when testing to DC which is 2 hours away from me (I just upped my normal comcast account to their burst account which moved me from their normal 8meg plan to their 16)). However, with Vudu I get between 2 and 4 meg. The average has been 2.5 meg. I'm wondering why this is?

Anyone have any thoughts here? My Internet speed is smoking now and yet my vudu sets itself to the 2 meg situation (not much of an issue yet as I am still not able to set vudu up in the livingroom for lack of a connection (as spoken about in length in another post)) but once I get my Ethernet conenction this week, I want to be able to use and abuse my vudu.

My first thought is how have you rigged up your temporary connection? Direct, wireless, powerline, coffee cans and kite string?

My second thought is that you should go ahead and override the diagnostic and set your Vudu for 4MB speed. Then try to rent/watch an HD movie and see if you get instant viewing.

For me the VUDU site test is one of the most accurate ones I've tried.
It shows almost 29.8mbs download and around 4.2mbs upload(whih is with two VUDU boxes using my connection). All the other speed test results I've tried are typically skewed a little higher than they should be for me.

I'm on the FIOS 30/5 plan. With FIOS you have power boost which can skew the results. WHen I had FIOS last year I was on the 8mbs tier with 30mbs powerboost. But I aslo didn't have VUDU until this year. I dropped Comcast INternet in Novemeber after getting FIOS internet in September.

Well, one set of tests was run on my computer via the vudu website itself. The same computer that ran the tests on other speed sites. I ran those tests over and over and over and over. and over. Same results. Then I tested the Vudu itself with an ethernet connection in my computer room, hooking the device to my pc monitor. Got the same results.

I didn't know you could override the diagnostics. I'll have to look into that, thanks!

For me, Vudu seems to be way off on its test. I download files on my pc faster than vudu says my connection is. I didn't know if maybe there was something going on with their test site or not since originally, the vudu site gave me an 8meg speed test (a couple weeks ago) and is now way down.

If the over-ride works on my vudu and I can watch movies instantly, I'll know it was a problem with their speed site and/or the route to my connections. If not, then I don't know what it is.

comcast. And it works beautifully for everything else.

Very odd. I have Comcast too and the Vudu test site is quite accurate except that it reports the powerboost speed as your speed...

In Sacramento, I have ATT DSL basic with 1.5M down and 768k up. When I run the tests it reports almost to the penny the same speeds that I subscribe to. So based on experience I would have to report the tests as accurate.

I would like to get something faster but we're in the outbacks and too far from their switch to get anything better.

The only alternative I think I have is Hughes Net, but everyone seems to think that would be worse than what I've got now.

                    Re: bandwidth test

For me, Vudu speed tests always show a much slower upload than any other speed test, and I do run them sequentially under close to the same conditions (both hardwired).

Could you please post your Vudu System ID (looks like 0x12ab)? Also, what browser and OS combination were you using when you got the bad results?

I cant give you my Vudu info as it is currently unplugged waiting for the contractors to finish installing my downstairs network jack.

As for the tests I ran, the Vudu and two pcs were all wired to my network in the same room.

                        PC1 - Windows Vista - IE 7
                        PC2 - Windows XP Pro - IE 7

Remember - last week on these same machines, when I tested bandwidth on the vudu site, I was hitting 8 meg download speeds.

since the last handful of days (including today) I am getting about 2 meg on vudu site. Yet, at Speakeasy.net I hit 15 meg and up (sometimes to near 30) speeds and at dslreports.com I hit around 17meg and at Cnet I get 5 meg and at bandwidthplace.com I get 5 meg. So while the blazing speeds of speakeasy could be off, the other two are showing similar at 5 (which has me curious as I am supposed to get much more than 5 - looks like a call to Comcast is in the works) but even still, 5 is more than 2.

So this goes to show that speed tests are totally insane!!! As long as I can get my Vudu to run at 4meg speed, I'm a happy man.
