    A/V sync issues

    Hi,

    I found similar issues on the forum when searching but nothing recent.

    Last night I ordered Source Code HDX and Water For Elephants HDX and both were out of sync plus several trailers (SD) and previews (HDX) that I watched before ordering those two movies.

    Had to go into my AVR's menu and manually set the "lipsync" option to 2ms delay (so I guess the audio was "ahead" of the video) and that fixed it. This is the first time I've ever had to enable lip sync (auto or manual...up until now I've always had lip sync off) and I had to keep messing with it to maintain sync from one movie/trailer/preview to another. I first tried the auto lip sync option but that either did nothing or didn't help enough to get perfect sync.

    I've never had lip sync issues before and the only thing that has changed is the Bluray player's firmware and the Internet app (including Vudu) software. I don't use my BR player/Vudu that often (last used several months ago) so when I turned it on last night I was prompted to (and proceeded to) update the firmware and Internet apps software. Could this cause lip sync issues?

    My DirecTV and WDTV media player don't have any lip sync issues (same AVR). I don't have any BR discs right now but soon as I can borrow one I'll check to see if discs have sync issues as well or just Vudu.

    Thanks,

    ->g.

    Glc,

    What model blu ray player do you have? Did you try power cycling after the firmware update?

      Samsung BD-C7900. I tried power cycling inbtween movies but I can try again and test with trailers/previews. I'm going to test with a BD soon as a get a chance that should determine if the issue is the player or vudu.

          Alright, finally got around to looking into my lipsync issue more. This is after physically power cycling (unplugging) my Samsung BD-C7900 BD player.

          Avatar on BD played fine no issues.

          Vudu previews and trailers seemed to playback better; still noticed sync issues though, but unlike before I was able to regain sync by toggling between SD/HD/HDX or restarting the clip (previously, once sync was lost only way to regain was via my AVR's lipsync option). I tried several trailers (Vudu rental trailers + movie theature trailers) and 2-min previews. Seems like the issue is with HD/HDX and not SD.

          NOTE: Hadn't used my BR player since the last time and was prompted to upgrade the Vudu app (just the Vudu app; not the player's firmware) upon starting the vudu app; maybe this update helped.

            Re: A/V sync issues

            I also had sync issues on my last HDX rental (the girl and the fox). Audio and video was way off. Audio was 3 seconds ahead of the video.
            My guess is, that this is a network issue combined with the way VUDU does it's encoding. The video / audio streams should carry timestamps so the player can resync when connection was lost due to network problems. This doesn't seem to work propably with VUDU.
            If you compare this to Netflix you'll notice how sometimes the picture will freeze for a short time to allow A/V sync (e.g. when the player needs to re-adjust due to poor network conditions).

            @glc650
            2ms... your sure about this value? Considering that at 24fps a videoframe "lasts" roughly 40ms... Usually people start to "feel" that something is wrong with A/V-sync when audio and video are off more than 2 frames (80ms). Naturally this also depends a lot on the material... No offence there, just wondering...

              Yea 2 ms on my AVR is what I used last time. This time though I ddin't even bother messing with the lipsync option on my AVR since I was just verifying the cause of the problem andthe BD played back perfectly in sync.

                I believe that the movie you mention "The Girl and the Fox" has encoding issues. We're aware of the problem and have let our content team know. You shouldn't see the problem on other movies.

                  Re: A/V sync issues

                  Still having lipsync issues on my Samsung BR. Testing with the 10 min clip of Girl with Dragon Tattoo. It works fine on my Samsung TV though so it looks like this is a FW issue (or a Vudu app issue not sure) as I never had this issue until the last software update on the Samsung BR.

                  I doubt I'll get anywhere with Samsung's lame support (they'll probably just blame it on my Internet connection or the Vudu service). Anything I can do further to confirm this issue and get Samsung working on it?

                  Thanks,

                  ->g.
