      Slash,

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Patrick and I'm a Product Manager at VUDU. Next, let me thank you for enjoying your VUDU enough (at least until now) to fill your hard drive.

I'd love to hear further about what you you like and don't about your VUDU box as well as what you would like to see. I know disk space expansion is at the top of your list. Unfortunately, the previous discussions about having hard drive expansion didn't come to fruition in the time span originally mentioned. I'm sorry about that.

Believe me, we do realize that active and impassioned users such as yourself will encounter disk space issues and it's in our interest to keep you happy and using the box. With that said, I can't commit to anything (we've learned our lesson about that ) but please do understand that such topics are common internally.

Feel free to PM me with anything you want to discuss and we can take this offline. We want you to be happy with your VUDU box.

      Patrick Ellis
      Sr Product Manager, VUDU

Re: Vudu had failed me,im done

I knew I had another 750GB drive somewhere. I forgot I had setup an external enclosure with a 750GB hard to use with the VUDU back in early Spring with the anticpipation of external storage being implemented. I can use that drive in one of my TiVoHD boxes now and when VUDU implements the external storage then I can put a 1TB or 1.5TB drive in the enclosure.

I've dealt with enough cutting edge electronic devices to know that sometimes for multiple reasons features get delayed, so for me it's no big deal. But it is good to know the external storage is still on the roadmap.

Actually, you can't use any external drive on the THD. You have to use a Tivo certified drive - there's something in the ROM of the drive that is programmed as such. It's different than with the Series 3 boxes. Now, you can hack the Tivo so that you can use any 3rd party SATA drive, but then the drive menus built into the TiVo won't be used or work.

I'm talking about the 750GB drive I put in the external case. I have a 500GB drive in one of my TiVoHD boxes and all I need to do is copy the data from the 500GB to the 750GB drive. I'll get a 1TB or 1.5TB drive to put back in the external case to use with the VUDU. The external case was mentioned in a thread earlier this year on sale so I purchased it for the VUDU.

It's not that easy to swap out drives. You'll need to do some of the hacking stuff to do that. I'm not sure why, but FWIU, it's not just a matter of copying the drives.

You might want to talk to Lou at DVRUpgrade.com. He's here on the forums. I think his screen name is DVRUpgrade.

If you already know how to do it - great. But it's probably a bit easier to just purchase a WD MyDVRExpander box, IMHO...

It really is just a matter of copying the drive from a user perspective. You just need the right software to do it. I've done it dozens of times in the last 6 years.
Currently the easiest way is to use WinMFS. That way you can do it in the Windows environment. I 've used it in XP and VISTA with no problems. You connect both drives to an SATA port and you just click on the copy function. It will copy the entire drive including recordings. It doesn't get any easier. You can also do a backup of the basic OS and season passes etc and save it to the PC hard drive. Also, if you want more space, you can use the SUperSize option which will allow you to put space on the drive that is normally reserved for some TiVo content. So instead of say 134 hours with a 1TB drive I can get 144 hours(not sure of the exact amount) Anyway, six out of my seven TiVos have been using the Supersize function for over half a year with no problems.

OK. Wow. I was told that it wasn't that easy and that doing your own upgrade broke certain Tivo features like being able to easily add an external hard drive via the Tivo UI (you have to hack into it and use some Unix commands instead).

I suppose that was just wrong info?

I think, Aaron is just talking about upgrading an internal drive which should have effect on external drive options or whatnot.

Yes I was talking about the internal drive upgrade. For my TiVos I will not rely on an external drive since it has recordings made everyday and I don't want to risk losing anything since there can be problems once the drives are married.
I use TiVo Desktop with a RAID that has 3.75TB of capacity. And most of my TiVos have 1TB internal drives, so any shows I want to archive I can transfer to the PC I have dedicated to TiVo Desktop. And if that isn't enough space I have over 8TB in my HP Media Smart server for more network storage.

The external drives are working fine for me on my Tivos. Of course I don't consider them long term storage.
